In the village of my GF ( won't say where ) I have never seen a policeman, let alone an immigration official. Sometimes a few of the villagers put on vests to look official when outsiders roll in for shows. The Poo Yai settles all village disputes.

I doubt very much Immigration would get off their backsides to visit villages like this. Closer to major cities, maybe.

What on earth caused him to be at Bang Kwang mens' prison? Had he been convicted of a serious crime?

Normally they end up at the Immigration Detention Centre  on Suan Plu,  South Sathon, Bangkok.

Well i was on overstay for 35 days 4 years ago, so according to you i should have been kicked out.

Who knows, he may even suggest that you should have been given a lethal injection, as there seems to be no limit to the level of brown-nosing some (not all) posters are willing to do here when it comes to applauding these almost daily crackdowns on overstaying expats.

 

I thought (silly me) that the original (and great) concept of a Tourist Police was primarily to help and assist the tourists by hiring English-speaking officers.

 

What this particular officer seems to be doing, however, is morphing the tourist police into an anti-tourist police. Yes, yes, and yeeees, I know he's only after the 'bad guys' (one of these typically vague concepts that can lead to so much abuse in the field of politics), I know that overstaying is not OK, that rules must be respected and also that some expats here - including among the retired population - are nothing but thugs on the run.

 

I know all that, but one must wonder why, on account of one man's love of media attention (and whatever other items on his personal agenda), the whole time and energy of the tourist police should now be so one-track minded.

 

I don't think I'm the only person here (at least, I hope so) who doesn't particularly condone or appreciate the victorious smirk he puts on when standing in front of these arrestees. It's systematic and it speaks volumes about the guy, who seems to be thoroughly enjoying himself in situations like that. Again, I agree that they're arrested for a reason and that they're breaking the law, but why the need to rub it in their faces with such arrogant glee ?

Another interesting fact to note , if you notice it’s tourist police who are doing all the raids , not immigration, not RTP.

Their job is to assist tourists, instead they raiding hotels, raiding businesses, raiding schools etc.

 

Mr. Big Choke is more ambitious than his colleagues at RTP and Immigration.

If you live in Thailand at a permanent residence, have a marriage, retirement or another type of one year visa and happen to go for a short trip & stay in a hotel, I don't really get the point of having to go to your local immigration on return to report you've arrived back home ???

A very short overstay indeed. An old friend, alas long passed away, did 20 years over, and all it took was 1 night in jail, a court appearance and 20,000Bht fine, and off he went back to U.S.

I walked into the Pattaya Immigration office, handed in my 90 day renewal paperwork. The Officer then advised me that the 90 day was for last year. Apparently I had a mental fart. Went home, listened to my wife's well earned right to kick my ass (not physically). She took over the situation, I wound up being fined B 22,000. Since then wife handles all immigration efforts. I no longer become involved in anything involving more than my once a week bar bill. I'm not totally mentally incompetent but at 68 I make mistakes I should not be making. I was never threatened with Jail and Immigration Service treated me with respect.

Yep....Thailand can't even solve a bombing because half their security cameras don't work, but they can sure as hell crack down on those nasty miscreants that hang around and spend money in their developing backwater.
