DPM Wissanu assures country has ample time for all election-related processes

 

 

BANGKOK, 28 June 2018 (NNT) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam has assured that the country has ample time for all election-related processes. 

Dr. Wissanu clarified to local media that he may submit a request for the Constitutional Court to rule whether the 150-day time frame leading up to the election also includes the 60-day process of officiating the election results.

 

He said the request will only be submitted should the government or the Election Commission (EC) raise the issue. The issue was earlier raised by former EC Commissioner Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, but not by any current official. 

The deputy premier assured the media that, if the election takes place in February next year, the country will have ample time to undertake all the prerequisite processes.

Taken these guys 4 years to get all their pins in a row to ensure the outcome of any "election" and the opposition are given a few months to get their acts together.

Free and fair is unlikely to come in to it.

Neither is an election at this rate...

Poor old Somchai, seemed the most sensible of the bunch. 

 

So why doesn't the EC just go ahead and seek clarification?

Well that would make sense, wouldn't it: The election results being officiated before the election. Clear as mud. ?

Under current circumstances it is impossible that an election, whenever it is held, can be other than a travesty,As the East Asia Forum (James Taylor) has pointed out.

 

"Upon seizing power … the military junta was quick to suppress dissent, limiting rights and freedoms. The coup makers replaced officials at all levels with hand-picked senators and lackeys emplaced in all public sectors, administration, courts and so-called independent bodies. Aside from the implications of the 2017 military constitution, this would make it difficult for a new freely elected party to implement institutional or policy reforms."

 

Many Thais voted assent to the Junta's constitution in the hope that by doing so the day would be hastened when the military returned to barracks.Many also were grateful that there were no further disturbances on the streets (ignoring the fact that the military had worked closely with Suthep).

 

Now the middle classes including the yellow factions have tired of the Junta and are looking for a civilian administration that suits their interests.Difficult to see how this will emerge given current environment.

 

PTP still a force to be reckoned with but not as in former days.Constitution designed to cripple it.Also some significant internal issues.Not impossible it will be banned.

 

Junta looking for ways to be represented by a political party, perhaps with Suthep's backing.Already electioneering while other parties prohibited from doing so.Foreign pressure no longer a concern.

 

Meanwhile huge questions about ultimate power in Thailand.

 

A fair election in 2019? Give me a break.Probably there will be one but the same self serving elites will remain in charge.These people are determined not to "waste" the last coup.

Which has been challenged by both Democrats and PTP parties because the time period for mandatory party primary nominations for candidates must also fall within the same 150 day time frame.

As every party must  have a candidate for every constituency, for the Democrats and PTP with large national memberships, the primary will be an onerous time-consuming task. Which is why they have asked the NCPO to waive using Article 44 primary party elections that are required by junta-appointed NLA law. Such request is supposedly under NCPO consideration.

Correct me if I'm wrong ... but I don't believe that Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam has ever actually run as a Candidate in an election.

Gawd, I really would not want this guy's job. It calls for a skill at lying far in excess of anything I possess, and his micro-expressions positively reek of wanting to be somewhere else, doing something else.

 

The smell of burning martyr is really strong right now in this government.
