Breaking Fee

Featured Replies

I came across a Thai expression I cannot translate, because I have never even heard of the concept, although the phrase itself is easy: Ka yieb Brek (price for activating the brake).

It comes from the farmer milieu: often farmers are too poor to deliver their rice to the coop they belong to. So they have to pay a transporter after harvest. And of course they pay transportation fee, fuel and usually send a person along. However, on top of all this they have to pay the "breaking fee". The whole thing means that after receipt of such money the driver will bring the shipment to the coop and not swerve into the next rice mill that announces a higher rice price, or just runs off anyway. This practice not common all over Thailand, but only in a small area.

Question: how do I translate that with a few English words that everybody can understand? :o

Yes, your wife is right, it IS the payment to the driver...for operating the brake at the right place (and not where he pleases). However humorous it may be, it appears in the books (yes, exactly like you wrote - sorry don't have Thai font) and I have to translate it so that a foreigner can understand it. :o
