We have had a married couple helping out around our place for about a year. They live in the next village over and do a good job, working for us for two weeks out of each month. Regardless, my wife has always said that the lady speaks Thai differently. Come to find out, this worker is from Lao and has lived in Thailand for 11 years.

She likes working for us as we pay B300 per day. Other farmers pay B270 and sometimes less. Each and every month she heads to immigration and pays B1900 to get another extension. Her passport says working is prohibited.

Is this common for Lao people living in Thailand? This is a new one for me.

Yes, this is very common now. Not 10 years ago. I am not sure which legislative change made it possible. Nowadays, whenever I go to a land border, it is inundated with Laos doing out-in's. No need to go to Laos either, they can nip into Cambodia or Myanmar. All working in Thailand I would imagine.

in & out, in & out

since she has a passport, it would be MUCH easier for her employer, (ur wife)  to employ her legally an get her a 2 year  L-A migrant visa and wp which comes with a thai health card as well.

total cost without an agent ...under 3,000 baht for 2 years!

She is leaving and re-entering the country every 30 days for a new visa exempt entry under a bilateral agreement.

No extension stamps are shown in the pics only departure and entry stamps for Thailand and Laos.

But wouldn't that require us to setup a company that pays at least B50,000 in taxes per year.

NOPE, an individual can hire a migrant worker ( laos, Burmese, Khmer) to work as maid, housekeeper, nanny

an agent will assist if u cant be bothered with all the paperwork but still under 15,000 baht for 2 years visa

Looks like your Lao worker travels home every month, probably to give money to her family and get another 30 day entry.

There are borders nearer than Paksan if she just wanted a new 30 day entry.

I thought the recommended minimum wage was increased to 330 baht per day.

Rather than spend 3,000 baht on an L-A Visa, why not give them a wage increase instead.

From her history, even with an L-A Visa, she'll still visit Lao every month to visit family.

It sounds as though you want to do the right thing for her, so why not consult her first before taking any action.

If she is married to a Thai, she could get an extension based on marriage without any financial proof.

The OP never mentioned her husband/partners nationality.
