Judge rejects Trump request for long-term detention of immigrant children

(Reuters) - A U.S. federal judge on Monday rejected the Trump administration's request to allow long-term detention of illegal immigrant children, a setback for President Donald Trump's executive order to end the separation of immigrant families.

 

Los Angeles U.S. District Court Judge Dolly Gee dismissed as "dubious" and "unconvincing" the U.S. Justice Department's arguments to modify a 1997 settlement that says children can only be held in immigration detention for up to 20 days.

 

The government made the request in June to allow it to keep underage migrants in detention alongside parents, after a public outcry over its policy of separating children from parents who entered the United States illegally.

 

"It is apparent that the Defendants' Application is a cynical attempt to shift responsibility to the Judiciary for over 20 years of Congressional inaction and ill-considered Executive action that have led to the current stalemate," Gee, the daughter of Chinese immigrants, said in her ruling.

 

The government asked Gee to suspend the Flores settlement's requirement that immigrant children be held only in facilities that meet state child welfare licensing regulations, so as to allow whole families to be detained together.

 

Gee, who was appointed to the bench by President Barack Obama, said the government had known for years that there was "no state licensing readily available for facilities that house both adults and children."

There  were/are plenty of informed/educated American who understood/understand just how awful Trump was and would be once elected as president. And he's certainly gone on to exceed those expectations for awfulness.

 

But between Russian meddling and hacking related to the election, the Democrats fielding a relatively unpopular opponent in Hilary Clinton, overt propagandist media like Fox News, and the Christian and right-wing segments of U.S. society, not enough to keep him from becoming a stain on the U.S. and its presidency.

 

Hopefully, he's a stain that will be erased at the next presidential election, or perhaps sooner.  It really will be a good indicator of just how deep into the uninformed/ill-informed sewer the American public has sunk.

If the rest of the world responded in the manner you're suggesting, Trump and his ilk probably would like it and applaud.  And I don't think that's what either you or I would want.

A fair point.  I equate the idea to bringing an errant child into line, but that could go well or badly.

Except of course that immigration of illegals has declined drastically from its height in 2001. But if you get your information about immigration only  from pro-Trump news sources and from Trump himself, it's likely you wouldn't have a clue about that.

First off, I disagree with you. I believe that there are plenty of intelligent Americans. But it is clear that you are not acquainted with any of them.

Considering that posters on this forum are anonymous, It certainly doesn't reflect well on your powers of thought that you conclude that I am not an American and assert that you are without any possibility of proof. And even if you could prove that you are a citizen of the United States or that I am not,  how does paying taxes validate ignorance?  And hasn't Donald Trump asserted that the proof of his intelligence is how he has avoided paying taxes?
