  • Right, Bluespunk. For a man to be called a paedophile is just about the nastiest slur that could be cast on a man's character. It's not like saying something such as: 'Oh, that diver is a silly idiot'

Not sure I could just forget what musk called him.

  • Musk could easily win this case since Vern started the rant. Everyone tried to offer help in this severe situation so to blame Elon for his mini-sub and call it a PR-stunt isn't something that has val

Why is everyone focused on the name calling? Doesn't anyone care about the actual disagreement at the heart of this which is whether the sub could have made it or not?

sub had no chance. hopefully it will get developed into something for the future for an incapacitated person but no more than that. i think musk 'was' on a pr hunt and it may have backfired

*like most of his shitty electric cars

Musk should provide evidence or make a very humiliating apology.

This is mud that really sticks...

Even if Mr. Musk apologizes, Mr. Unsworth could still bring civil action.

Civil action where? In USA civil libel is a state issue not federal. And it may be that Mr. Musk was not even in the USA when he made those tweets.

Well he may have a number of options on where to sue...

Musk is now a US resident, the US courts award eye watering amounts in damages, problem is they are appealed and it will take years to get any of it, with many noughts knocked of the original award and the lawyers getting most of it.

The UK the favorite for deformation, but more realistic awards, but again the the lawyers are the ones to gain the most.

Thailand, well not only a civil matter but also deformation is a criminal thing too so could serve time at the BKK Hilton, down side is Thailand is totally incompetent at extraditing it's criminals and plenty of opportunities to buy his way out of the shit hole he dug for himself.

I don't really understand why you keep banging this drum.  If he was in the US when he typed/ said it, then Unsworth can pursue it there at state level according to your comment.  If elsewhere he can do so under local law.  Unless Musk was precipient enough to make sure he was in a country with no libel/ slander laws he can be pursued wherever he was.  Musk's comments were libelous/ slanderous, Unsworth's were not.  I don't think 'he started it by being mean about me and my sub' is going to cut it.

Musk has 22.3 million twitter followers. If you'd be happy with him slandering you and calling you a paedophile to that many people, so be it. It's not like it was words spoken between to two in a bar. Personally, I'd be suing him as well. Maybe I'm just not as big a man as you...

Maybe time to close his twitter account...

The European Union has given Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and other internet companies three months to show that they are removing extremist content more rapidly or face legislation forcing them to do so.

Social media firms have come under increasing pressure from various governments and the EU to do more to combat extremism and remove terrorist and objectionable content such as hate speech and Islamic State propaganda. But now the EU has given them a target and a deadline.

There are many thousands of us living in Thailand, would the offence be greater if we are married and how much will we get, in $$ preferably ?

Can't wait to see Elon's sub going to cave 5.....Show me Elon! I think you can do it.

Going from the outside to cave 5 is child's play. With the water level low on the day of his VIP tour, Musk could walk there.

It is from cave 5 to cave 13, where the boys were holed up, that the passageway is in parts so narrow that the divers had to take their oxygen tanks off their backs to squeeze through and then put them back on.

Damage Done

My opinion of Musk has gone from genius to r-sole in 1 day. That makes very little difference in the grand scheme of things but I imagine I am not alone with this opinion. I won't be buying any of his current, or future, products. I look forward to seeing him go bankrupt - somnamna

It's like a coursebook example of how to dig yourself into a hole. Not just over his spat with Vern, but before that with his cheap jibes at Narongsak, Elon Musk has proven himself to be egotistical to the point of rank stupidity. If he'd just said from the beginning that he'd done his best to help; that he understood perfectly why, under the circumstances, the Thai authorities had gone with the diver-assisted option;  that he hoped anyway that in the future his escape pod might prove useful; that he was grateful for being given the chance to have a try, etc, etc, blah, blah,-   then he'd have got all the publicity he wanted and come away smelling of roses. Instead, because his submarine wasn't chosen to do the job at the time, he had to start in with the insults and snide remarks .

But if he'd only just been civil, old Vern almost certainly wouldn't have told him where  to stick his submarine, and he (Musk) wouldn't have finished up in a damaging media war that has all downside and no upside for someone in his position. And now he's likely looking at a court case. Vern Unsworth is probably not a rich man, but for a chance to shakedown Elon Musk there'll be lawyers queuing up to take this all the way on a no win no fee basis.

For a man who's supposedly so very clever Elon Musk has demonstrated a remarkable lack of common sense.

To be honest, I've never understood why people post on twitter. No good ever seems to come of it.

Well if you're white and you live in Thailand, that's exactly what he called you.

There is no way a smart guy like Musk was going to call this guy "pedo" without checking up first. Musk has a lot of nerds working for him. They have dirt on this guy! It could be a picture or a video dug from the archives. If the Brit does not quit while still ahead, he will live to rue the day he entered that cave. It's LOS. Many skeletons.

Or local gossip his Thai minions might have gathered in Chiang Rai.

But the way I see it now. Vern's a jerk. Musk's a jerk. But the boys are alive so who gives a rat's ass.

Funny the Thai's I know don't feel insulted they are just amused and bewildered by the strange behavior of these guys..

If so he wouldn't have deleted his tweets within a few minutes...

Looks like Musk may have "torpedoed" his own biz and rep by his comments. Unless of course there is some truth to the matter.

In any case, sad how a miraculous rescue has devolved into this.

He knows its already out there. Nothing leaves the internet. It's bait. He knows he has your guy right where he wants him. Next move is your guy. Watch him crawl back to wherever he sprung from without a whimper. ? Tick tock.

Agreed, and if was Vern, I would try to keep the peace.

In the US, anyone can sue anyone as long as they can find a lawyer to take the case and get a Court to recognize venue.

so what?  The point that you keep ignoring is that Musk defamed someone while Unsworth didn't.

He is/was the 53rd richest person in the world...

I see, well maybe his sub can fit in that hole, maybe not....i bet he can build a sub with a jackhammer at the front as well to make that hole bigger.

The guy just tried to help, and a mini sub was a very good idea....
