Buying used Grand Jeep Cherokee (diesel)

I plan to return to Thailand from Myanmar next March, (when my school contract comes up for renewal).

 

Previously, when living in Europe, I had a Grand Jeep Cherokee (4.0 litre petrol).  Apart from guzzling the 'gas', I really enjoyed this car, which seemed reliable.  I actually bought another Grand Jeep Cherokee about 4 years after the first purchase, because the car really suited me.

 

In Thailand, I have usually owned Toyota Vigo pick-ups, which have served me well.

 

This time round, I'm considering buying a used Grand Jeep Cherokee diesel model (to reduce fuel costs), probably an early 2000s model.

 

My main concern is whether there are dealers or mechanics around the country who will be able to service and repair the vehicle.  (OK, I can probably do the service, but if it breakd down in south Thailand, I don't want to have to transport it up to Bangkok...).

 

Can anyone comment on the dealer network (or non-dealer garages who are competent to repair this car)?

 

I've seen LPG conversions advertise, but fear that these could be dangerous, sub-standard conversions, and of course there are the bulky LPG bottles to consider..

I personally would like the 4.0 litre V8 but my chance has past.

Just to correct above post  the v8 is 4.7 liter

Owned a  Grand but petrol v8. Cars are robust but electrics electronics are weak. Biggest problems are getting spare parts. Some parts took 4 weeks to obtain. There is a garage in bbk called triple A who specialise in them

Sorry forgot to add that( I maybe wrong) I have never seen a diesel Grand Cherokee in Thailand.

Cherokee diesels  are thin on the ground.

Almost all petrol Jeeps for sale are LPG converts.

I have owned a Cherokee, and 2 Jeep Wranglers, all 6 cyl 4.0 Liter's.

The  petrol tank removed and the LPG tank put in its place, with a separate fuel tank fitted between the chassis legs.

Fuel consumption around 6.5/7.0 KML.

Spare parts second hand and new were available at the breakers yards at Bang PLi.

Many new parts are also available at motor factors shops, who can also order from Bangkok.

You can also order from America, many dealers, shipment usually arrives in around 7 days.

Looking into this further, a Jeep Cherokee would probably be fine - I'm not buying it for the looks.  It does indeed seem that many of these models (and the Grands that I've seen advertised) have LPG conversations.

 

Considering how gas-guzzling the petrol engines are, what's the typical cost-saving on fuel with LPG? (I'm not sure how much LPG costs nowadays in Thailand).  Does the conversion involve putting a tank behind the back seats?  Or is the petrol tank replaced or the LPG tank placed where the spare wheel usually goes?

To the above poster a Grand Cherokee is advertised in a Thai newspaper so can't give full specs.

It is a 2016 3000cc diesel for 5,500,000 baht
