Unless the company is ruled by a Thai-Chinese family who watch every satang and trust absolutely no-one.

Seems like those Thai-Chinese actually have working brains. "Trust no one" is the only thing you need to know in Thailand.

Don't take what isn't given - or screw the boss paying 310B/day

We also need to be mindful of how we treat, and compensate, our employees. The more generous we are with our suppliers, co-workers, employees, and clients, the more bountiful our life will be in both spiritual and financial ways.

Of course. It happens everywhere here, every day, and in every sort of establishment. Theft is commonplace.

But most people are either too stupid to notice or too lazy to care.

My take on it is that regardless of who the thief is stealing from, I dont want thieves serving me. I want thieves to be in jail. Why? Because stealing from an employer will at least cause the employer to put prices up, which affects me. And it may cause the business to fail, which may mean that I cant get the product I want. And the same guy may go on to steal in other ways that affect me even more directly.

Without any allusion to morality we finally have some common sense written.

An employer can't really afford to put prices up by much because they are unlikely to be the only ones in the area selling Pepsi or coffee or whatever so people will buy it from someone else

He really has no other option than to catch the thief and plug the leak

I still can't think of any known chains that would show you the total on a hand-held calculator. They all have displays that show that.

Why not say the name of the chain? It's not a direct implication of anything against them; they are just the backdrop for employee theft.

When there is a POS or cash register , I always ask for the receipt….

In 7-11 especially if I do not want the plastic bag and go out, I have proof that I paid the item.

Why ?

A close friend of mine a few years ago bought a pack of chewing gum  in a supermarket ( in Thailand ) and as he was going out the security stopped him and accused him of not paying  the small  item that was in his pocket . No receipt and no bags.

Lost an hour ,calling the manager, trying to remember witch one of the 7 cashier  he used ? Then waiting to watch security CCTV. Fortunately the CCTV was working that day. And all that  was difficult as he does not speak Thai and only the manager could handle a bit of English. Fortunately he kept his calm.

Another example of learning Thai as a must, at least to a basic level, if you want to stay here longer than a tourist. ...

I find this story hard to swallow, though. Just walk back to the cashier and settle it. (Ask all seven...the one who rang it up will remember.) She will remember you, and the sale will be in the store's receipt. Watch CCTV over a pack of gum? Yeah, right....

I'd encourage the employees to do this to the likes of McD's, BK and KFC. Huge multinationals making money off the back of hard working employees on 310B/day.

Especially on the soda stream drinks that cost virtually nothing to pour, are sold on huge mark ups and aren't, in my previous experience working for a large PepsiCo outlet in the UK, monitored for stock 'losses'.

Yes it must be horrible to have a job in air conditioning doing light labor compared to doing a job out in the elements doing heavy labor for the same pay.

I have been in a couple of food outlets in Pattaya that have signs near the register asking customers to request a receipt and check the details. They even provide a phone number to ring if you dont get one. Obviously employee theft is common in some places if they do this.

In the late 70s when I was working in a big pizza place, some geezers would pay with old coins or bills -- pure silver coins and silver certificates (this is in the US). No idea why; maybe just to see how I would react.

I would fake the ring up and pocket the bills or coins and then on the next sale, put my own (current bills and coins) in the till to make up the difference.

Many subway restaurants in bkk have a sign up about receipts

you really don't know anything. you've made an observation and now your making a conclusion based on what?  maybe the employee is correcting the till? more importantly get a life, you sound like a loser.

Whether my reasoning was is right or wrong. I feel for the employees of these multinational corporations that pay their employees a pittance. I had no intention of getting involved other than to post here about it.

I certain would not report the employee for the reasons you mention, but if it was a very small business, and the owner is only trying to make a living, I would report it to the owner then.

So stealing from a big company is okay, but stealing from a small company is not okay?

Explain, please...

Stealing by staff  is very common.

some are smarter than others , usually they would just take the whole day takings and do the runner.

police hardly ever bother to chase up until stolen amounts add up to large sums.

or they get handed a brown envelope.?

Yes,  the absent owner is the victim for sure.

I often wonder how fast food or any minimum paying job can be filled with good and honest employees.

More power to them  (those good and honest employees)  I say.

If someone is working for a big company and is getting a raw deal, if he/she sees an opportunity, then they should take it.

But never against a small business where the owner/ manager are just trying to make an honest living.

There is such a thing as legalised theft you know.

What is "illegal" to someone is "legal" to someone else. ?

Isn't theft, theft?

Or is it okay to steal an expensive car, but not okay to steal an economy car?

It's okay to mug and steal from a wealthy person but not okay to mug and steal from a commoner?

What sort of mind-warped thinking is this?

If you get this cashier again, next time while paying pretend your looking in back for someone

Then ask is nong Sak gone?

If he asks who? say that kid they caught stealing & dunked his hands in the deep fryer.

Does he still work here?

Discounting the Bible, and other holy books, 'theft' is simply a man-made decision, called a LAW and enforceable by the STATE. If the State cannot enforce the law, then theft becomes commonplace, as in street riots, civil insurrections etc.

But individuals, you and I, can find a higher reason to avoid theft. Keep looking.

I think that most of the Thais ie, market stall, small business owners in the up country areas are honest decent people, although maybe it is different in tourist areas like Pattaya and some parts of Bangkok.

Some years ago, I had some burger bars, the staff were doing the same thing. I started a promotion asking the customers to write their names on the back of the receipt and put it in the tombola box. Once a week we had a raffle and two winners received the same food as was on the receipt, free. It worked. Customers asked for their receipt.

People who steal from their own kind are the lowest of the low, whether it is the small business

owner or the ordinary person.

That also includes knowingly cheating the girl/guy at the checkout at Lotus, Big C etc.
