PHUKET: Officials from various local government agencies carried out random inspections on fishing boats at Rassada Pier yesterday looking for cases of illegal employment, working conditions and human trafficking in the fishery industry.

No irregularities were found during the course of the officials’ inspections.

Must be a set up, those guys never normally get to wear a life jacket !!!

Those are the kind of jackets that have been banned from Chalong now, only real life jackets.

And also at Chalong pier everybody is required to wear a life jacket.

How hard did the inspector check ?  Or was the usual lip service and a fat envelope in pocket.

Perhaps ALL the boats were sent a warning of the imminent inspection and then just three boats were RANDOMLY checked from the total number.  A similar system to the way raids on bars in Pattaya and elsewhere are operated, although in Pattaya's case the advance notice of raids appears to be selective, to ensure that those really targeted are the ones caught.

Why? Most of the supermarket seafood in both Oz and Thailand is farmed produce.

You need to look deeper, the farmed fish and prawns are fed with protien made from the by catch from the vessels of the Thai fleet, no  sizes or species are spared. Theses are also the fleets accused of Human Rights abuses.

Are these the same fishing boats we can see daily using their bottom trawl nets just a couple of hundreds meters of Kata and Karon beaches? (think the trawl limits is 3 nautical miles from land) ?

Yes- you are  correct.

If you look at the shoulders of the two "fishermen" wearing "life jackets" they appear to be new and just been taken from a box/package.  To be fore warned is to be well prepared.  Are the jackets kept available for when a "surprise inspection" takes place then returned to be maintained in pristine condition until the next inspection comes around?  Just curious.
