Battle of the Bigs! Could Big Joke be the next Bangkok top cop?

Speculation is rife that crime buster "Big Joke" Surachet Hakpal could be in line to take over as the top policeman in Bangkok.

Maj Gen Surachet - currently the deputy commissioner of the tourist police - is one of four being mentioned as possible replacements for the job of metropolitan commissioner come the September civil service reshuffles.

Current incumbent "Big Yom" or Charnthep Sesawech is set to retire after just a year in the top job. He has been quite low profile - especially compared to the "in your face" public profile of Surachet.

Big Joke Surachet has been seen everywhere busting call center gangs, skimmers and "people with black skin", reported Thai Rath yesterday in their story about reshuffle rumors.

He also has good relations with foreign forces after a series of awayday forays to places like Dubai and the Philippines.

He is young and relatively experienced, however, being in the police "Class of 47" (2004). But a further plus for Surachet is that he will likely get the nod from "Big Pom" - that is his close associate and deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwan.

Also possible, however, is that Surachet merely goes up one step and replaces the tourist police chief Pol Lt Gen Sakhon Thongmanee.

Thai Rath noted that the tourist police enjoy status similar to other forces these days after their branch of the force was upgraded.

While Big Joke enjoys the limelight, however, he was still only rated as number two in the stakes to be the new Bangkok commissioner.

Number one in the race is "Big Bua" Pol Lt gen Suthipong Wongpin who is currently head of immigration that is part of the police structure.

Big Bua is a friend of "Big Pe" who is the current head of the national police. Big Pe is Pol Gen Jakthip Chaijinda whose strong performance this year is likely to see him continue in the role when the PM "Big Too" Prayut Chan-ocha decides the new roles.

The reshuffles this year are seen as particularly important with elections looming possibly as early as February 2019.

Deputy head of the RTP Pol Gen Sivara Rangsiphromkun is likely to stay where he is at best. He was criticized earlier in the year for showing the Ital Thai owner charged with illegal poaching too much respect when they met.

Big Bua is part of the "Class of 36" (1993) so has seniority and age on his side over Big Joke in the battle for top Bangkok cop.

The other two mentioned as in with a chance are "Big Pat" Pol Lt Gen Suwat Jaengyort who is currently head of Region 1 police and Maj Gen Panurat Lakbun who is currently the second in command at the Met to retiring Big Yom Charnthep.

Hope he get's the top job.

Best performing cop I've noticed in 30+ years, and never any suggestion of inappropriate activities (e.g. borrow 300Million from a massage parlor tycoon who is now on the run).

And he doesn't seem to be afraid of anybody. I wonder if he can speak English?

It is sad that big joke is all Thailand can muster.  Busting overstayers and the occasional call center are hardly triumphs.

At least he is one of the few people here following the motto: Know your limits!

No need to speculate based on performance like all police positions the biggest brown envelope dictates who gets promoted. When a basic job promotion in the local government in Isaan costs 250K we are talking big bucks.

But do you recall the national police chief (about 3 or 4 back) who publicly stated that he had never ever heard of police buying positions and such a system would be impossible?

You got it all wrong that must have been a quote by the national police chief of New Zealand, the least corrupt country in the world.

Given that he has spent a number of years busting foreigners,  you may wish to build your model planes indoors and ask your wife to change the tire should you get a flat on the side of the road.  All might be considered working with BJ at the helm of the police force.

Let the bidding begin. I wonder what the reserve price for this one is. It’ll be BIG that’s for sure.

It is no secret of Resentment between police and the army .

perhaps the reason why tourist police has been doing all army dirty work not the actual police or immigration .

all th raids and new law enforcements all done by tourist police .

i have a feeling this is armies idea of bringing police under its total control and almost certain big joke would be the main man

OVERSTAY!!!!  The unique Thai obsession that does damage to the country by punishing people who stay and spend more money. The logic of lunacy.

how much would overstayers spend?

Is because they have no สrse in the pants that they had no money for visa and extensions.

Anyway, this operation dark hawk (or whatever they call it) report of busts are the guys with a darker shade suntan

who enter the country illegally, working illegally, and doing illegal and scam business annoying and ripping off everyone.

they are pretty much good for nothing and useless for everybody.

id guess most dont even support any Thai or family.

I must agree though if your argument refer to an overstay white Big Johnny Blake who rarely it is to see Big Joker going after.

BJ will probably go after Big Johnny also in time but you cant blame them for busting firstly these absolute waster of space guys who are breaking 3-4 laws.
