BANGKOK, 28th July 2018 (NNT) – Thailand has moved up seven places in the Global Innovation Index 2018 rankings, now standing at number 44.

In his national televised address, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha commended the government’s technology and innovation policy, citing it as the main factor behind Thailand’s ranking in this year’s Global Innovation Index.

Released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the index provides detailed metrics about the innovation performance of 126 countries which represent 90.8% of the world’s population and 96.3% of global GDP. Its 80 indicators explore a broad vision of innovation, including the political environment, education, infrastructure and business sophistication.

Last year, Thailand was at number 51, he noted, pointing out that Thailand is moving in the right direction in terms of technological development.

The premier said Thailand has always been known to have high capacity in creative and high-tech products as well as petty patents or minor innovations.

Through innovations and technological advances, Gen Prayut believes Thailand will be able to play its role in the world community for decades to come.

It is everyone's dream, belonging to a nation, marching down the streets, celebrating, holding up 8 fingers,  while shouting with pride to the world: " We're 44".

I must travel more. The other countries must have degraded to stone age while I wasn't watching.

Due to that nothing goes forward here, I am really interested to know what seven countries is the poor loosers that did even worse?

Is there a reason why the innovations causing the jump by 7 ranks are not mentioned?

Maybe it is a smart move as some people and companies react a little sensitive when it comes to plagiarism and and copyright infringements...

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha (R) meets with Francis Gurry, director-general of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) at Government House in Bangkok, Thailand, on April 23, 2018.(Xinhua/Pool)

This meeting had a happy ending.

There are some good factories in Thailand doing good work, but the grand hooha is big on grandioseness, filling the room with hot air, prideful pridefulness, grand theater and stature statureness, not those silly facts.  Most high tech products produced in Thailand are dreamed up outside of Thailand.

A nice general statement general but no.  The US relies heavily in immigrants for innovation and todays Thai government is highly nationalistic and xenophobic.

I'd like to know what some of these innovations are, seriously, I live quite a sheltered life, so I haven't actually noticed any at all.

No one has come up with an invention that prevents balcony falls. ?
