Suicide bomb attack on Afghan Shi'ite mosque kills 39, 80 injured

Officials say the men who attacked a Shi'ite mosque in Afghanistan on Friday were dressed in women's clothing. Rough cut (no reporter narration)

KABUL (Reuters) - Thirty-nine people were killed in a suicide bombing of a Shi'ite mosque in eastern Afghanistan, and the death toll may climb further, police and government officials said on Friday.

Two burka-clad militants attacked the mosque in the city of Gardez in the province of Paktia where more than 100 people had gathered to offer prayers, said Raz Mohammad Mandozai, the police chief of Paktia.

At least 80 people were injured when the men struck with guns and explosives at the Khawaja Hassan mosque.

Gardez city hospital reported receiving at least 50 adults and 20 children wounded in the attack.

Abdullah Hazrat, a senior government official, said the militants opened fire on the worshippers and one blew himself up. Security guards stationed at the mosque gunned down the other militant.

According to an eyewitness, the assailants had entered the prayer hall and were wearing full-face veils.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the Friday attack but militant group Islamic State (IS) has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on Shi'ite mosques in Afghanistan.

The attack underlines the country’s dire security situation after four decades of war and 17 years of U.S. intervention. Islamic State increasingly claims responsibility for attacks on civilian targets even as pressure builds for peace talks between the Western-backed government and the Taliban.

Islamic State has frequently targeted Afghanistan’s Shi'ite minority, which it calls "apostates."

While Afghanistan's wars have mostly been fought among Sunni Muslims, there have been increasing numbers of attacks on Shi’ite targets in recent years.

No reliable census information exists on the size of the Shi’ite community in Afghanistan, but estimates range around 10-15 percent, including most members of the Persian-speaking Hazara ethnic group and some Tajiks.

Another awful atrocity against innocents. Hazara Shiites are one of the primary group of asylum seekers out of  Afghanistan, very much in Western countries interest to eliminate IS Khorasan ASAP.

US current annual military expenditure in Afghanistan is twice the Afghan annual GDP. US is currently negotiating to pull out of Afghanistan, so one hopes the US will continue their expenditure to support the Afghan military to counter the IS Khorasan group and Taliban groups who refuse to compromise to achieve peace. Afghan Taliban have also been fighting IS Khorasan though it has been claimed some Taliban (Afghani and Pakistani) have joined IS Khorasan for better pay.

How sad...

...and we do not even know the seriousness of the wounds of those 80 people. Often time amputated arms and legs.

One has to be seriously mentally ill to do that and unfortunately, there are many of them.

You can read similiar stories just about every day if you look. They kill, maim and injure people just because they are from a different tribe/religion. Stupid people. If they world had NO religion it would be a far far better place.!!!

Ever conflicting tribes , reason why one after another, victims today, executioners tomorrow, all are entitled to ask for asylum one day or the other

The world would be a far better place without all of them. As far as I am concerned they are not entitled to ask for asylum just because their country is <deleted> up and the good old tax payer in their chosen country gets to foot the bill for these idiots. They should be staying in their own country and trying to help to fix it but it is too easy just to jump ship and <deleted> up another country.!!!

As a matter of interest, just how many shi'ites have been involved in recent Western atrocities. I think we need to condense this down to specifics, and their backers.

The OP is in relation to the ongoing oppression and murders of Hazara people in Afghanistan. So far as I know persons identifying themselves as Afghan Hazara, for a cause, have not been associated with Shiite terror attacks in the West or elsewhere, although there are reports they have joined the likes of Hezbollah / Iran to fight against Sunni Salafi terror. Hazara did assist Western forces during their invasion of Afghanistan to take on the Taliban / Al Qaeda.
