Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha refused to talk to the media when he presided over the opening of Thailand Social Expo 2018 at Impact Exhibition Centre on Friday morning.

The prime minister’s aloofness with the media was reported to stem from a commentary, entitled “Don’t let Thai junta chief chair ASEAN next year”, in The Jakarta Post dated July 31.

Written by Kornelius Purba, the commentary said the ASEAN chairmanship will be handed over by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to Prime Minister Prayut this November and asked would Indonesia just let it happen.

“Don’t let Thai junta chief anything''?

Photographers must bow to the prime minister before and after taking his photos and must not take pictures while he is walking, descending on stairs or eating.

This.

The commentary accused Prime Minister Prayuth of employing tactics to silence the media, manipulate legislative bodies and oppress freedom of speech and assembly.

He just doesn't have what it takes to pull it off like Yingluck could. She was a natural in front of the camera. Prayuth needs to brush up on his techniques if he's to over come his camera shyness.

Good on the Jakarta Post for writing the following and for Thai PBS (amazingly - normally so junta-friendly) for reporting it:

'

It [the 'Jakarta Post'] said that ASEAN will unnecessarily humiliate itself in front of the global community when the regional grouping introduces Prime Minister Prayuth as the chair next year.

The commentary accused Prime Minister Prayuth of employing tactics to silence the media, manipulate legislative bodies and oppress freedom of speech and assembly.  “But why do Thais, including the media, seem to “accept” the junta?'

Exactly! That is what some of us are asking. So even Indonesia is wondering why on earth the Thais take this junta so easily - so totally acceptingly. Yes, yes, we know all about the guns and past assaults - but it is interesting (to me, at least) that even other Asian countries feel that the Thais and the Thai media are rather too supine - and that any country that gives honour to the junta HUMILIATES ITSELF.

It does my soul good to hear such truths being spoken. Wish all the Western governments would speak in this way too and take a firm line  ...

ASEAN protocol has always prevailed and they have a fundamental policy of non-interference in domestic affair and respect of the sovereignty of member countries. As much as we are disgust with the situation in Thailand and the nice piece of article by Jakarta Post, grudgingly Thailand under a coup government will get the chair.

Careful what you wish for  Uncle Too. Imagine what would happen if the press did not report on you.

They could devote space to corruption, nepotism and the true state of the economy.

Easy answer...... they have an army with guns. As far as the people are concerned that's scary enough. The people just want peace and the army are providing just that if nothing else.

Hence all is well......for the time being

Hmmm…that’s odd. He's always been so warm, cordial, and friendly with the media as well as welcoming their attention. Maybe he's just feeling...out of sorts. There's a lot of that going around these days.

He is the head of a military junta.  Myanmar in 2006 was under pressure to pass the chairmanship because it was a junta.  Myanmar duly passed the chair.

Until Prayut returns democracy to Thailand, he should be duty bound to do the same.

'... Photographers must bow to the prime minister before and after taking his photos ...'

What complete bo___cks! He should be doing the bowing - to the electorate.

All this is too much for him.  He should retire.

The end is near thank god

You can get away with strong arming a lot of different people but strong arming the media can bite back. They always seem to have a way to get their message out and if you get on the wrong side of their message it can influence the people the media reach...the voters.
