Hi. i got a visa non o ME which have expired and im on my last entry.

I plan to exit a Nong Khai, and i remember a similar situation many moons ago, i was denied exit and sent to an office 300-400 meter from the border which then transferred my visa. But at that time, the visa might still have been valid and i was possibly just doing an in/out, but i simply cant remember.

Afaik the old passport have been cancelled but the visa should still be valid, on the other hand, getting a exit stamp in a new passport without a visa/entry might be an issue, yet alone on a land border (Nong Khai)

I know, i could just go to emigration, but besides taking time, they will use 2 pages to replace an expired visa and furthermore delay everything so i would need to spend the weekend in Vientiane waiting for the Embassy to open.

In short the question:

Can i exit in Nong Khai using both the old cancelled passport and the new passport without visa/entry stamp (plus i got some letter from the embassy stating they issued me a new passport)

Thanks in advance.

You can do it at a border crossing.

Your visa will not transferred. They will do a annotation about the visa you used for entry.

The will transfer your entry stamp to the new passport and stamp you out of the country in it.

Nong Khai will likely send you to the nearby immigration office to do the transfer.

Yes, that what i would like to avoid, it would easily add a couple of hours to cross, besides its not really in walking distance (if i remember) and i dont come in car, so it adds a bit of extra stress (dealing with tuk tuk drivers, explaining, getting them to wait etc) and time... ?

Thanks again obonjoe, much appreciated

Make sure you know the difference between "visa", "permission to stay" and "extension of permission to stay".

Visas are never transferred from your old passport to the new one.

The entry stamp associated with the initial permission to stay you get when entering the country (if not extended) can be transferred as you leave the country.

A one-year extension of your permission to stay, issued at your local immigration office, cannot be transferred when leaving the country. The transfer must be done in advance, usually at the same local immigration office.

Plan your crossing when the immigration office is closed in Nong Khai. They will do it at the bridge if they are closed.

Thats what i did last time, and was told come back tomorrow. back then i didn't understand that they told me to go to Emigration the following day so when i went to the border the following day, just to be told to travel to emigration office and then back and a simple crossing took quite a few hours and stress. In hindsight, i should have insisted or asked politely for them to fix it for me as i would not be able to travel the following day or something like that. that might have done the trick.

Alternatively, what if i fly directly to VTE, from Suvarnabhumi, is that easier done there? it might be a bit more expensive, but if it can remove some of the hazzle/stress away from me, i would not mind it.

thanks again

Yes

Leaving from any airport would be easy.

US Embassy issued me a letter with my new passport requesting co-operation from Thai immigration in transferring my Visa from the old, cancelled passport.
I dutifully made the trek to CW Immigration only to be told "Not necessary".
Per Ubon Joe's post it was handled at my next exit/re-entry. by the IO officers simply stamping the nw PP. I did take the old one along with my original non "O" visa in it, which was looked at, but don't know if it was necessary. They did collect the prior entry card of course.
