Junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha gestures to reporters Tuesday at Government House.

BANGKOK — The junta chairman invoked his absolute power Tuesday night and expelled the anti-money laundering director, drawing ire from the regime’s opponents.

Using Section 44 of the previous charter, which remains enshrined in the current constitution, Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha removed Romsit Weeriyasan from his post. The junta has yet to give any explanation, but an opposition leader on Wednesday suspected the junta was asserting its authority over the anti-fraud agency.

One can speculate endlessly on which hi-so's don't want their international transactions looked at, but while the junta is in charge we will probably not get enough information to do anything but speculate.

Thought they were reassigning him, but it all looks devious, dubious and wrong.  These are sad days in Thailand.

They know no shame do they? Blatant interfering with supposedly independent organisations.

Anti fraud chief Romsit was removed simply because he was getting to close to the truth regarding the current mobs fraudulent activities.

haha plan to stay on for how much longer? still waiting for that election, bet it would be moved due to Prayuth still trying to curb corruption

Those who run the country getting their errand boy to serve their needs.

This is exactly the reason Yingluck was impeached. But ok when you are "good" people with full amnesty. The hypocrisy of this government and its supporters is beyond belief.

Any use of Article 44 is corruption.

Anyone who declares himself pro-military is pro-corruption.

Any registered political party that declares itself pro-military is pro-corruption and should be deregistered.

Of course such would be in a perfect world where the EC is truly independent.

Various agencies are constantly "ordered" to do their job by an all powerful individual, instead of automatically doing it according to the dictates of law and procedure.

That same individual "assesses" their activities and "pulls" them at whim.

There is no mistaking the nature of the regime.

Gee, wonder why? What was the biggest fraud committed against the Thai people in the last 4 -5 years? Oh....oh right.

I bet we'll have a long wait before we get a believable reason.

I am truly sickened by what this shows, corruption of the highest office

Col he was getting to close to the nerve center headed by that guy in the picture. Moral to story you do your job the correct way in Thailand and you are shown the door quickly.

I wonder who he was investigating?  Who was getting hot under the collar?

IMO, whenever a decision like this is made, to invoke article 44 to remove the head of an independent body, without any explanation to justify this sort of drastic action, it shows to me a level of panic.

If K.Romsit Weeriyasan is involved in any illegal dealings, you can be sure this would be published already. The very fact that no explanation has been given start the alarm bells ringing very loudly.

This story reminds me of the top cop who got too close to the human traffickers and fled to Australia, what happened to him?

I remember being lectured by several nasty individuals on here that a military takeover was needed to stop corruption. ???

If the Junta is trying to portray itself as clean and anti-corruption, they are doing and absolutely appalling job.

Show me the money.  Who gets paid and what do they get paid?  Are the Junta on a payroll system?  Who decides their pay?  Is their pay publicly disclosed and believable?  Who audits the treasury?   what is the state of the treasury since the junta took over?  Can a Thai person even dare ask such questions without reprisal?

yep and bet he has also a pick-up to make up for his other deficiency

No doubt he was getting close to something that the top junta guys did not like him getting close to. So he had to go.

“This is even worse than the Tawil case,” Thida said. “It shows that they are dictators who can do anything without any concern. They already granted amnesty to themselves. Anything they do is lawful. They don’t have to be afraid of any lawsuit.”

But Veera, the transparency advocate, said future elected governments could also repeal the junta’s amnesty on its acts and pave the way for Romsit to sue over his expulsion.

“They can do anything to protect themselves right now,” he said. “But this can be reversed in the future.”

One can only hope down the road, that Little P., Prawit, and some other leaders get the opportunity to spend many years in prison for their crimes.
