THE CRIMINAL Court has sentenced the girlfriend of an unethical ex-lawyer to jail for helping him swindle road-accident victims out of more than Bt4 million in compensation.

Pornpawee Chukaew was slapped with a term of three years and four months and also ordered to pay about Bt2.3 million in compensation to victims – Porntip Chantharat and her wheelchair-bound daughter, Pattarada “Beam” Kaewpong.

“The court delivered this verdict on Wednesday. Now, we are waiting to see if the convict will appeal,” the Lawyers Council of Thailand’s spokesman Sombat Wongkamhaeng said yesterday.

An appeal, if any, must be filed within 30 days after the court ruling.

Pornpawee’s boyfriend, Pisit Sammalert, did not appeal when the court handed down a guilty verdict and a six-year jail term last year.

The pair were brought to justice after the council stepped in to help Porntip, who had publicly lamented that Pisit took most of the Bt5 million compensation a private company had offered to her family for the accident. She lost her husband in the incident and she and her daughter were seriously injured. The daughter has been wheelchair-bound since the accident.

Porntip initially let Pisit represent her in dealing with the firm, because she believed his claim that he genuinely wished to help her family.

Later, Pornpawee showed up pretending to be the company’s representative and talked Porntip into accepting just Bt1 million in compensation.

Pornpawee had claimed the company was facing cash-flow problems and got the victim to sign a paper agreeing not to sue the company.

After that, Pisit gave Porntip just Bt285,000 and disappeared.

Pisit pleaded guilty in court last year, and has been disbarred by the Lawyers Council of Thailand.

I sincerely don't understand that they were swindled out of 5 million bht but only have to pay back 2.3.

Commandeer all of the guilty's wealth and when they get out of jail turn them into full time valet's is the punishment they deserve!

Thai justice really sucks.

I think only Pornpawee is liable for 2.3 MTHB, hopefully the lawyer was ordered to repay the outstanding amount.. plus interest.

Well that's put swindling and cheating lawyers on notice; too easy.

Now they can tackle the much more difficult task of recovering money from the tens of thousands of swindling and cheating civil servants. Like those who have stolen funds from the destitute and poor.

Thainess seems to know no limits when going low... they have a penchant for it!

Not just Thais, there is a reason that there are so many lawyer jokes.

What do you call a lawyer at the bottom of the ocean?

A good start.

Thainess. We see it more often, every day.

Nothing to do with general Thai ethics, you get crocks like them in most countries including the UK and America.

They are Scumbags who do not reflect the general population of Thailand.

Nice to see justice working and reported, sorry to say I doubt the victims will ever see another Baht of their rightful compensation.

Or maybe the Lawyers Council will step in and compensate???

Hope the Courts apply the most severe punishment allowed by law on both the lawyer and his consort.

If you were to read the OP she as an accomplice got 3 years 4 months and he got 6 years and disbarred.

That you (we?) don't see it does not mean it isn't there.

Doesn't mean that it is there either, in fact it's less likely to have happened if it wasn't reported.

But, more to the point, whether these things happen or not my comment that we do not see this kind of thing every day is correct.  We don't.
