August 27, 20187 yr PM pleases with large-scale farming scheme BANGKOK, 27 August 2018, (NNT) - Thailand's Prime Minister is pleased with the large-scale farming campaign, as it is proven to save production costs and increase the income of farmers. Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha reiterated that agriculturalists should farm alternative crops alongside rice to reduce the risk presented by price fluctuations. The Prime Minister has indicated that more than 80% of participating rice farmers are pleased with the campaign, saying that large-scale farming allows farmers to form groups to increase negotiating power and income and strengthen production capacity and marketing prowess. The government's 2015-2018 large-scale farming campaign also promotes the production of high-quality rice, while advocating unity and self-reliance among the farmers. Currently, the rice department is supervising 1,902 plots of large-scale farms which cover more than 384,000 hectares of land in 71 provinces. Of that number, 854 plots of land are undergoing a program to improve rice quality. It is expected that Thailand will be able to feed more than 300,000 metric tons of rice into the market this year. The government is expected to welcome the addition of 127,000 more farmers operating on 288,000 hectares of large-scale farms next year. The prime minister also strongly advises agriculturalists to farm secondary crops alongside their primary crops, raise livestock and process agricultural products to increase income and to make sure that they can make a living all year round. -- nnt 2018-08-27
August 27, 20187 yr The farmers are united on agreeing with whatever PM (e.g. military) says to do, but I'm not sure how that makes self-reliant. It makes look like they are too dumb to decide what should be planted. Surely that cannot be the case?
August 27, 20187 yr Popular Post I thought large scale farming concept is already practiced in cooperatives a long time ago. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperative oversee the policies, training, technology etc. I think he doesn’t know that this ministry exist. The optic of him strolling down the rice field does provide good PR but drop that microphone and why the people kept a distance away from him. I pity the guy carrying that amplifier as he walk. What a comic act. He totally not dressed for the occasion too. White shirt in a farm! ?

All of these factors follow an economy-of-scale that substantially reduces cost of production that results from consolidation of farms acreage. In other words Prayut seems to be citing a script without understanding the mechanics of large scale farming. He focuses on alternative crops and husbandry without a single mention of automation and mechanization - major Prayut themes for Thailand 4.0. He has actually weakened Thai agricultural competitiveness with no consistent national agricultural strategy, instead using (for example) on-the-spot subsidies on demand by each farming sector, government purchased farming equipment, temporary non-farming government unskilled jobs, debt relief and soft loans. As such I find his message more political than practical.
August 27, 20187 yr Remember how the farmers were lulled by monk isara. Only to be dumped a few months after the government was overthrown. Now it's dawned on Prayut that he might just need them after all. I see your true colors shining through.
August 27, 20187 yr How about govt's non-involvement and control has it applies to agriculture/horticultural free and open markets? Unfortunately, the way of the world.

August 27, 20187 yr Being the visionary that he is he is claiming the glory for inventing the concept of farming co-operatives The sheer brilliance of the man! Why has no one thought of this before?

August 29, 20187 yr We're so glad he is pleased. That will surely propel the farming sector and country forward. Sheesh!
