Pheu Thai will ban military conscription if voted in

Featured Replies

I've never understood the appeal of populism. Whereby people vote with great enthusiasm, for their own oppression under a one party, nationalistic regieme.

Ultimately, someone else usually ends up bombing the shit out of them, or they self destruct.

Crazy.

Game  over for PTP, they'll shut them down for sure now.

  • That's it. No chance for Pheua Thai now. Once they come out with this kind of policy (which is actually a sensible plan, in and of itself, in my view ), the militaristic Powers That Be will become apo

Sure your a crazy Shin fanboy nobody in their right mind would consider Thaksin clean and not corrupt. Also they proven 30 billion baht in losses from fake G2G deals and two high ranking PTP members are in jail for it. So much for your claims. But keep on going.

Now lets keep at the topic at hand, great plans, just not easy to or keep the promise.

Nobody said Thaksin is clean and not corrupt.

One has to manoeuvre within the environment in which they operate.

Thaksin certainly appears to be cleaner and less corrupt than those who came before and after him.

His actions and deeds have been scrutinised using the full apparatuses of the state for over a decade and a half for a net result of 1 ridiculously farcical conviction.

How do you think the Generals would fare under the same scrutiny (25 watches worth more than US$1million owned by a career public servant of a developing country......?)?

Who proved 30 billion baht in losses and if it was "proved" then why is the Junta controlled CGD issuing reports showing no losses?

You really do struggle to remain logical and rational.......corrupt courts jailing their political foes does not prove your point.

The Junta is nowhere near as powerful as you Fanboys want it to be.

Asia Times: So you’re saying that even in a landslide Peua Thai win scenario, they’re safe from you scrutinizing their record while in office?

Pongthep: I’m saying that’s their perception. So let them perceive that way. I am a lawyer myself, I know how to play with the law as well. Let them perceive that way.

Conscription is a waste of money and the lives of young men.   The PTP are right, but the junta will lash out in their predictable fashion with threats.   The PTP is probably banking on the Thai people getting tired of threats from the military.  PTP has been given the high road.

My m4-6 boys waste a day a week for 3 years doing this military training. At the end now have even discharged a firearm in anger. Definitely a waste of time, and causes a big problem for any boy who wants to study overseas for high school. They risk conscription if they return and haven't done their military service.

No they didn't.

In previous times they tried to improve the lives of the poor whilst not upsetting the Generals.

Today's statements makes it very clear that those times of accommodation are finished.

The military must either rule the country by force or be subject to civilian control.

Only one of these outcomes has a long term survivability.....too bad for the fanboys amongst us.

Frankly, I believe the peasants are quite comfortable with their lives....

think you are correct in that the poor are as comfortable as they can be, knowing that their concerns are of no value what-so-ever to the politicians - irrespective of the colour or comments, so learn to live with it the best way they can.

In post #63 you said this: Nobody said Thaksin is clean and not corrupt.

Two points.

1. Corruption takes on more forms than theft.

2. Just because there is no proof of something, doesn't mean it doesn't exist

(But remember, to convict someone, in a credible court of law you need proof  -so to call Thaksin a thief maybe true, but to call him a convicted thief is not true if you care an ounce for justice).

IMHO it's just another paymaster plan to create buy budgets troughs for the pt yes sir slaves to get their sticky fingers into.

It would be helpful if you explained how this move would do what you say. In my view, it removes a trough from the military snout - no more servants, no more bribes to get out of conscription, no more refunds from soldiers wages and a hell of a lot less power.  And with time, hopefully, the benefits  of a professional, apolitical army that is not in  a position to throw a coup every time its power is threatened. I can't see a downside. It will also as others have said force all other parties to show their hands  on this issue.

Do you imagine that if he owned a group of hospitals in Thailand, the junta and their backers would not have got their claws into it by now?

Look at how clever Thaksin is, he's even got hardcore Junta Fanboys such as yourself praising his policies.

You and your Junta are no match for the wily old fox in Dubai.

Big talk from politcians that have no lawn or freinds that need house keeping cheap.

Problem is how will the Thai Generals get their houses cleaned,    garbage emptied etc.  if the conscripts are not there ? Goodness gracious you can not expect these megalomaniacs or their families to do any work themselves surely ? They were not born into Thailand's hierarchy to get their hands dirty - what ever next ?

Thaksin just copied future forward.. he was first. Not smart at all... besides you can like plans of a party and not like their leader. Its simply too hard a task for you to understand that not liking Thaksin does not make someone a junta fanboy, nor is impossible for a party that one does not like to come up with good plans. You see everything black and white... that is your failing.

The toothlessness of local politics is a sure sign that both factions have the dirt on each other.

These generals are part of an armed forces hierarchy designed specifically to fatten wallets rather than to defend the country. Tai Ming Cheung, a journalist who reports on defense, recently wrote in the Far Eastern Economic Review that “while there are, on average, between 3,000 and 4,000 enlisted soldiers for each general in Western armies, the Thai army has one general for every 300 to 350 troops. More than 600 generals have offices in the army and supreme command headquarters in Bangkok, but one foreign military analyst estimates that only half of them hold identifiable military positions.
