My m4-6 boys waste a day a week for 3 years doing this military training. At the end now have even discharged a firearm in anger. In previous times they tried to improve the lives of the poor whilst not upsetting the Generals.

Today's statements makes it very clear that those times of accommodation are finished.

The military must either rule the country by force or be subject to civilian control.

2. Just because there is no proof of something, doesn't mean it doesn't exist

 

(But remember, to convict someone, in a credible court of law you need proof  -so to call Thaksin a thief maybe true, but to call him a convicted thief is not true if you care an ounce for justice).

It would be helpful if you explained how this move would do what you say. In my view, it removes a trough from the military snout - no more servants, no more bribes to get out of conscription, no more refunds from soldiers wages and a hell of a lot less power.  And with time, hopefully, the benefits  of a professional, apolitical army that is not in  a position to throw a coup every time its power is threatened. I can't see a downside. It will also as others have said force all other parties to show their hands  on this issue.

Problem is how will the Thai Generals get their houses cleaned,    garbage emptied etc.  if the conscripts are not there ? Goodness gracious you can not expect these megalomaniacs or their families to do any work themselves surely ? These generals are part of an armed forces hierarchy designed specifically to fatten wallets rather than to defend the country. Tai Ming Cheung, a journalist who reports on defense, recently wrote in the Far Eastern Economic Review that “while there are, on average, between 3,000 and 4,000 enlisted soldiers for each general in Western armies, the Thai army has one general for every 300 to 350 troops.
