PM Prayut yet to reveal decision on political future

BANGKOK, 29th August 2018 (NNT) — The Prime Minister has not yet revealed what he plans to do after the general elections, despite earlier reports that he was giving consideration to entering politics.

Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha said today that he has not decided to launch another Cabinet shake-up because there is no ministerial post that should be changed at this point.

Regarding his political future, which he earlier said would be revealed in September, Gen. Prayut said that he has not yet made a decision and would prefer to keep monitoring the movements of all political parties in order to determine an appropriate course of action while noting that he still has many months to think about the issue.

Commerce Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong also revealed no hint about his future plans, particularly after reports emerged that he has been considering leaving the Cabinet to become the secretary general of the Pracharat Party, although he admitted that there have been talks with many groups about his future.

In addition, Mr. Sontirat declined to comment about what Industry Ministry Uttama Savanayana could be planning for his political future.

Meanwhile, Vice President of the National Legislative Assembly Surachai Liengboonlertchai says that provincial and local elections look likely to take place after the general election because all six related laws are still being reviewed by the Council of State.

In the meantime he can remain as a free agent of the Junta Party and still have many months of "unofficial" electioneering ahead before he has to make a decision. And there is still plenty of public money left in the Thai Niyom slush fund to be spread about to buy public popularity.

Presumably if he declares his intentions he then comes under the same restrictions as all the other politicians and his funding source would dry up. That disadvantage would have little appeal to him.

Oh, please stop with these daily insults to everybody's intelligence, junta! As if we believe that Prayut really has not made up his mind to continue to be involved in politics: the entirety of the last 4+ years has been an ongoing preparation for him to 'return' as a 'democratically legitimate' PM.

Just sick.

Article 44 can take care of that.

Fearless Leader P truly is a freakin' nutcase since he apparently actually believes the endless steaming BS spewing out of his own maw.  Personally, I think the narcissistic rube probably should win the 'election'.  REALLY?!  Why?  Once he achieves his dream of becoming a proper 'democratically elected' leader—finally giving him the missing international respect he craves—you can be sure his super-inflated ego will cause his head to violently explode.  Problem solved.  :partytime2:

What is the difference between running the country and entering politics? He entered politics when he took over, just without an election and without the people giving him the nod.

The difference is that he get the non honorable mention in wiki as

Current leaders who assumed power via coups d'état

Allowing himself, to place bets at the last furlong.

The future is clear, it's only the road to it which has to be decided.

God help this fella if he fails.

Forgive my pedantry, but retaining the title, Prime Minister, might suggest that he was a freely elected head-of-state through legislative practice, yes?

Hmmmm....

Wouldn't Field Marshal be a more appropriate address in these circumstances?

This would be funny if there were not such huge consequences. Everyone knows he wants to remain in power but does not want to follow the rules he has established for politicians. This is a preview of how much he will share with the Thai public if he wins (has he already?) the election.

My prediction is that the temptation to the trough will be to great and he will continue as chief snout!

Actually I don't think it is the temptation it is to maintain his snout in the trough

I thought he was in politics?

Well.....yes and no.

He acts as the proverbial puppet working in the name of others.

As it's always been - civilian or military.
