Diabetic Advice

Featured Replies

Getting a lot of lows for the past 2 months or so...  Been Diabetic type 2 for close on 30 years,  Red Cross Hospital put me on Insulin in May 2014,  NovoLog Mix, then changed to Mixtard in November last year, no idea why or what the difference is. both are 30/70 mix......   have been taking a lot less Insulin than what the Dr ordered..   last week before evening meal was 135, took my insulin as normal, by 3am wake up sweating and shaking,  BS was 35 !! last Sunday was 67, this morning 78........  on my last Hospital blood tests was 103....  A1c 6.4....  been around this for over 2 years. [ 6.3 - 6.7 ]

The last Dr's answer is take what insulin you need... !!!   one problem is every visit is a different kid [Dr]............. about 4 visits ago Metformin was increased.  to 3 a day, but still I  take just 1x in the morning... the only time I have seen a male kid Dr..

Just wondered if any other Diabetics had the same problem ? any advice..?  when I was in Hospital for a week in 2014 my BS was 550. should I still be on the same Insulin ? dosage ?  wondered if maybe should stop taking the insulin in the evenings ? but take a Metformin instead ?

I think you need to invest in a consultation with an experienced doctor at a private hospital. It will only cost about 1000 - 2000  baht (unless they think lab tests are indicated) and is a much better idea than trying to figure this out on your own, especially given the severe hypogylcemic episode you have had.

As I see you live in Nonthaburi I suggets you consult

 Prof.Dr. Apichati Vichayanrat

at Thonburi Hospital  Mon-Fri 05.00-06.30 PM   Sat 09.00-12.00 AM

He has more than 30 years experience, trained and board certified in the US,  and is a very senior professor. Will certainly be better than what you are getting by way of advise from the young interns where you have been going.

Thonburi is not too expensive as private hospitals go, most consultations are under 1000 baht.

I've done OK BG testing before and after meals and being cognizant of the glycemic load of what I've just eaten (keep a record)...then one gets a feel for the necessary adjustment to the metformin and insulin required to provide effective BG control...I try to stay under 130 fasting and not more than 180 but if I succumb to a snickers or a cornetto then I know that there will be a problem needing some compensation...

like Sheryl says your recent hypoglycemic episodes require that you talk to someone urgently...dangerous stuff...

doesn't matter what I do the neuropathy in my feet seems to get worse...got a suppurating wound on my ankle that doesn't want to heal that has got me worried...

Many thanks, live 16 km north west of Bang Yai, so not to far.  have eye problems so do not like to drive to far anymore, one of the reasons for using Red Cross Hospital next door both husband and wife work there for past 22 years, so get a lift to the door.

This month the highest it has been is 134 once and 131 once, mostly under 120,  this morning = 108......  the neuropathy in my feet.... No idea if it get worse, been bad for 20+ years, have no feeling at all for some years [wear diabetic shoes for 5 years]

I find a cream for any wounds helps a lot  from Pharmacy ' Skinfect- B'  ......... Use 'Wangwan oil' on feet every night.and 'Diabederm Urea Cream 20%'  in the mornings also from Pharmacy cost 320 baht for 150 gram jar

Ask about buses. Maybe they can drop you off at one or somewhere not far where you can get a taxi.

Call the hospital first for appointment.

To save money don't buy medication at the hospital, buy at an outside pharmacy.

Bring record of all your blood glucose readings with you.
