The Magic of Thailand Post

I'm normally critical of the postal service, but today I'm calling them wizards.

My mum sent a care package, and completely left out the second line of the address.

Somehow a package addressed to this address ARRIVED..... ON TIME:

(My  initials and last name)

Condo Room Number,

Bang Phli, Samut Prakan

10540

No street information.

No name of my condo building (which usually takes the place of the street since it's a huge landmark).

Just... how did it get here?

I don't even have public records like listings in a phone book for people to find me like they use in the USA ( once upon a time, just out of high school I worked for  UPS, and that's how we'd correct bad addresses).

It was address to a completely different name from all my previous shipments, since they had been addressed to my ex (we broke up a month ago).

Just... HOW?  I'm impressed.

They probably asked the local Motorcycle Taxi driver for 'The Felang'.

I too have been impressed by Thai post in the past - reliable.

That's kinda funny because  it's almost true.  There's only one other Falong I've seen at my condo that's been consistently here over the years.    There are a few others  I've seen for like a month before disappearing  but that's it.

Or asked at Immigration.

If you regularly get mail they might of recognized your name at the post office.

I can go one better...one time I was pedaling my bicycle along the main Sukhumvit road, the postman pulled alongside me and handed me my letters without either of us stopping !

I'm impressed with the service going the other way.

My last non-urgent letter to the UK from Surin took eleven days by second class airmail for just 45 Baht.

An urgent first class letter some months ago took only 3 days - much faster than Royal Mail ever managed.

With the handful of "farangs" in our district (postal code) the postman will have learned all by name

Well, they had all this information, should be easy. When sorting the post, they start from the bottom line (postal code) and go upward.

You'd be surprised what the local "postie" knows ! and locals love to gossip.?

Not just here, but everywhere, I suspect.  Back when we had a nursery/greenhouse business in the U.S., I'd receive plant catalogs from overseas, especially from rose nurseries.  The ladies at the local post office apparently would read them before delivery because they'd ask if we were going to order this variety or that variety from specific nurseries for the next year.

We few foreigners living outside the tourist areas are about as well known as a famous rock star in our home countries.

Amazing Thailand!
