Free coaching offered for college entrance exams

A mascot dressed as a schoolgirl entertained a crowd at Bangkok’s Siam Square on Sunday to promote the Sahapat Admission Project that offers high-school students free tutoring for their university admissions tests next month.

 

 

Well-known tutors have been recruited to share techniques from October 1-6 for passing key tests, including the Thai University Central Admission System (TCAS), Ordinary National Educational Test (O-NET), General Aptitude Test (GAT) and Professional and Academic Aptitude Test (PAT).

 

 

Students must register at www.sahapatadmission.com. 

 

The tutoring will take place at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce in Bangkok and broadcast live to more than 1,000 schools and universities across the country.

While this story with the photos looks very... childish, I think this is a good program.

 

University entrance exams are one of the defining moments in a young Thai persons life, and everything that can be done to 'level the playing field' between rich and poor regarding the tests is a good thing.

 

The simple fact is that the rich can afford to pay for their children to receive the highest-level coaching for the exams, and that coaching can easily be the difference between a top level institution and a third-rate institution. One would hope that it is knowledge and brains which are the determinative factors rather than the ability to take a test of a certain genre.

 

When a society places so much importance on a single test, everything that can be done to make the test fair is a good thing.
