Confidence levels in the Thai economy continue to rise

By The Thaiger

Consumer confidence in Thailand is riding high. In fact it’s at its highest level in over 5 years. A growing economy and better prices for farm products is believed to be part of the continuing confidence.

Regions in the country which have a high level of manufacturing or tourism are reaping the benefits of the growing economy.

A survey by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce says that the rate of export growth in June and July this year is up over 8% when compared to the same time last year. In baht-terms, that represents a rise of 4.1%, year-on-year. The survey says that exports have continued to rise for the 17th month in a row.

I think they need to tell the locals that in my neck of the woods.

My wife sells land and real estate, and for the past three years has found that so many people have told her they want to buy, but just can't afford to any more.

A large developer in Bangkok who used her services to find land nationwide (30-50 Rai) to build housing estates on, made the decision just after the 'change in government' four years ago to stick only to Bangkok for the foreseeable future, as they worried what the government may do next.

They haven’t done the “walking around” survey. They will be quick to notice that the malls, restaurants, retail shops etc are asking where are the customers. A quick survey will also revealed more empty for rent shop lots than before.

What a load of BS.Until this coup installed military is gone there will be no confidence in the economy, government or hope for the poor local people.

Confidence levels of the rich, I take it. The society is getting back to the good old times of proper sakdina, soon the peasants will be wearing shackles. Or working in a toxic Chinese owned sweatshops.

The economy for all the embedded military in the present coup government for sure looks rosy. The other 1% of business families that own 98% of GOP of Thailand do not give a shit and have move much of their business out of thai. Companies like CP have replace much of their work force with robots/machines. Only all the wealthy that own all the land are sitting on goldmines.

Foreigners can't own 100% of a business in Thailand, therefore, they would have to be Thai owned sweatshops.

I do the driving-around survey here in Surin every day of the year and I just notice that the number of 4-wheel vehicles on the roads - new & middle-aged, large & small - keeps steadily growing. Roads & crossroads that were 2 lanes & nearly empty 3 years ago are now 4 or 6 lanes & heavily trafficked.

All of that represents money, and while much may be borrowed (as people on this site are always quick to comment), someone is paying the installments and paying for the fuel because the vehicles are on the roads & being used.

mfd101. All the vehicles on the rad only means thai can get a 0% loan for a new vehicle without next to no credit rating. The local Thai are beginning to drown in debit. They get a pay raise, the price of goods goes up 2 times more than their wages.

mfd101. You give your land title for 10 rai of land I will give you a new vehicle. If you do not pay the loan off I keep your land. Happens all the time. Lose some land, but get to drive some new wheels around until you cannot afford fuel to drive around.

OK, so then the number of vehicles on the roads will be diminishing steadily from now on. Is that right?

It only works that way in a small percentage of cases, the banks and finance companies really don't want to end up owning land hence they are much more likely to demand a guarantor where the applicants' creditworthiness is substandard.

The Thai bashers will never acknowledge anything good that happens in Thailand!

While all the while Thai apologists  claim the opposite.

Excellent news ? that should keep the peasants occupied and working, give them less time to think about what their "government' is up to ?

Isn't that how it's supposed to work by design?

The country outside of Thailand that has confidence in the Thai economy is China as they are in bed with the present government. Between military equipment, trucks/buses, submarines, jets and loans etc. All makes you wonder the end game. Look what china is doing in Africa. They have lent so much money that will not be paid back that they can take over the countries.

The current government loves China so they'll get BOI in no time.

However it does summarized the economic reality “The truth is, Prayuth and his men in uniform squandered the last four years and the economy is paying the price”.

"Paying the price".....

Hmmm...... with increased confidence levels.

Consumer confidence was probably riding high 5 years ago under Yingluck. Then there was the coup on May 2014 and martial law was declared and as a result every economic performance statistic went through the floor.

All that has happened since is that they are back to where they started five years ago. That's nothing to brag about. The organ grinder and his monkey could have achieved that.

So it's now approaching levels not seen since the Yingluck regime before the Democrats went rogue (again).

And only took over 5 years to do so.

Thank you PDRC and the military for such a great job.

Consumer confidence is important but it's not the be all end all of things, unless you're expecting a consumer-led recovery/growth that is. And given that exports and tourism are doing that job, I'm not sure how important it is in economic terms.
