Bangkok hosts govt reception for cave rescuers

Thousands of people will today attend the government’s grand reception at the Royal Plaza to thank all those involved in the search and rescue operations of 12 Wild Boar soccer players and their football coach assistant from the flooded Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai from June 23 to July 11.

 

Among those attending will be the Australian rescue team led by anaesthetist Dr Richard Harris, more than 3,000 Chiang Rai residents and 10 rock climbers from Krabi’s Railay Bay.

 

Harris and the Australian rescue team members on Wednesday had a meeting with national police chief Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda and police inspector-general Pol General Suchat Theerasawat about further possible rescue cooperation in future. 

 

Chakthip is asking motorists to avoid the area around the venue in order to ensure a smooth traffic flow for those attending the reception and enhance security at the event. 

 

The reception, held under the official theme of “United As One” to emphasise the power of unity which goes beyond any differences in race or nationality, will take place at the Dusit Palace courtyard and the Royal Plaza.

 

Meanwhile, about 3,400 people, including 2,000 from the Mae Sai district where the Tham Luang cave is located, are scheduled to reach the capital by road at 2pm today. The Chiang Rai Transport Office has already checked the condition of the 72 buses to be used to ensure their safe travel. 

 

In the southern province of Krabi, seven members of the Railay Bay rock climbing group got onboard a van in front of City Hall on Wednesday morning while several others drove privately to Bangkok for the occasion. 

 

Group representative Suthee Sommart said he and his fellow climbers were proud to have been invited to attend the reception and was grateful for His Majesty King Rama X’s kindness in having the government host it. 

 

He and his team were also looking forward to once again seeing the 13 youths, for whom the search and rescue operation was mounted.

 

In a related development, 25-year-old Phra Ekapol Wisarntho (aka the assistant coach Ekapol Chanthawong) told a Department of Religious Affairs-hosted seminar in Bangkok on Wednesday that his previous meditation training during novice years from the age of 8 to 21 had played a big part in him surviving the ordeal. 

 

He said the training had kept him calm and his mind focused, and in turn this had helped the kids – whom he also taught to apply the technique – while they waited for rescuers. 

 

He therefore urged people to practise meditation at temples around the country.

10 rock-climbers, eh? I don't remember reading about those guys being involved but, when you've bragged about 61,000, then 6,000 and, now, 10,000 people coming from all over the world to attend this meaningless spectacle - apart from it meaning that Prayut will milk a cave rescue for every votes-worth of image-building that he can - you've got to big-up the numbers, somehow. Like the rest of his generally bad-at-maths Generals, they do have a problem with those 'nothings'.

And it's all that Ex Gov Narongsak's fault, doubling the Week-1 support figure from 480 to 1,000 and, a fortnight later, sticking one of those troublesome noughts on the end, when he thanked the 10,000 helpers.
The guy's a genuine fruitcake, but in my and an outdoor pursuits writer's view, he was just a clever component in a sham, possibly the sham of the century, as he reveals in his book, 'The Thailand Cave Rescue Conspiracy' (on Amazon) that tells what really went on behind the scenes of the 3-week rescue mission . . . the best 1-day read I've enjoyed for ages. And that was 1 day … not 10 days or 100 days … OK?

 

Bangkok hosts government reception for hundreds of army generals, police generals, government officials, tat representatives, and hundreds of other scroungers.

The genuine rescuers could not g et in, because the venue was full of hangers on.

You know as well as the rest of us the venue will be full of hangers on, just wanting their photo taken.

Just look back during the cave rescue at all the useless clowns who turned up just for a photo shoot.--------------------------------------

What an obscene waste of money and time. Do these 3,400 people - and why not the whole sucking population of Chiang Rai province, whilst they're at it - really want the couple of days off work? Oh-oh . . . silly question. And 72 buses should do wonders to snarl up the traffic on bangkok's already snarled-up roads. Next thing, we'll get a fortnight's notice that the election is being delayed a month, during dress rehearsals for the 1st anniversary celebration of the Tham Luang extravaganza. This Junta mob are the epitome of evil deeds by evil men.

And I just read an excerpt of it.  Painful reading, not because of the subject matter but because the author writes like a thirteen year old.  And his suspicions were initially aroused because the bikes were in a neat row and seemed quite new and we all know Thai people are poor and can't have bikes like that.  How utterly pathetic.

Sorry to hear of your disappointment, josephbloggs, but I have to disagree wholeheartedly with your comments. They did sound like you had your own very negative agenda behind your post, whereas I - and I do enjoy a wide range of writing - was making what I thought was a worthy recommendation. And I have to disagree about the bikes, so maybe try again, when you're in a better mood. Good that they have those preview viewers, though.

Yeah, he can come and get his subpoena. 

The then Chiang Rai Governor on the guest list ?   He did all the work and Payut gets a party and more limelight .  Our watch loving general will have a water proof model to show all the kids no doubt.  

 

Anyway,  those involved deserve to celebrate and be praised for their actions. 

Couldn't they have found a couple of taller generals for the official photo?
