Under Pressure, FCCT Cancels Discussion Of War Crimes In Myanmar

Monday night at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand.

 

BANGKOK — A discussion of whether key figures in Myanmar’s military should be prosecuted for genocide of the Rohingya was canceled at the last minute Monday evening under pressure from Thai authorities.

 

Coming two weeks after the UN’s top human rights body concluded tatmadaw generals should be prosecuted for genocide, the police came to the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand and told them to not hold the event.

Utterly disgraceful that Thailand should assist in sweeping genocide under the carpet. Shameful also that the foreign correspondents bowed to the pressure. Tens, if not hundreds of thousands have been brutally murdered, yet Thailand feels it more important to keep on good terms with its murderous neighbours than to allow the truth to come out and let justice be served. It says much about the lack of morality of this unelected regime that they can stoop to such disgraceful levels. The sooner we have elections and a truly democratic country emerges the better, at which point one would hope that standards of decency can start to return to the region. One also hopes in due course, article 44 or not, that those complicit in helping covering these atrocities are also brought to answer for their actions. Myanmar that appeared to be entering a new era has shown it does not deserve to be accepted into the international community and Thailand with these actions, deserves to be thrown into the same boat.

With John Bolton yesterday insisting that the USA will not be judged for any of its actions worldwide it is no surprise that Myanmar sticks to the same policy and hopes to get away with their atrocities using the same tactics, denial. That a military govt In Thailand silenced the discussion is a continuation of their policy of not allowing any dissent to reach the peoples ears. We are living in violent times, committed by governments who rule by the gun.

I agree with you but Thailand's unelected regime, who overthrew a democratically elected government, by virtue of using the force of an army,  is proof they have no morals anyway. It put them already on apar with Myanmar.  This latest act  is further proof to the the global community that the Junta condones the Myanmar atrocities and illustrates further there lack of concern for human rights.

One might be taken aback as to the maintained admiration and support from Thai influential types toward the decades long Myanmar military repression.

I would say all of ASEAN have a similar policy as many times in the past they have stated not to interfere in any of the member's internal affairs

Aung Sung is as dirty as the rest of them in Myanmar.She could have been a very large support for all the people of Myanmar but the world now sees that her idea is not to disprove of the genocidal  acts of the rest of the Myanmar government.These traits of her were hidden from most of the rest of the world and was first rumored to be  reported in the 1985-86 by UK intelligence during a profile report while she was in London.
