Thailand may be heading into a difficult 6–12 months or more, as a strengthening El Niño raises the risk of extreme heat, drought, falling reservoir levels and major agricultural losses. It’s the biggest since 1877 and on top of that effects are amplified by MMCC. This is no longer just a distant climate story about warmer water in the Pacific. For people in Thailand, the consequences could be very practical: less water, hotter days, higher food prices, crop losses, worsening PM2.5 and increasing pressure on both households and businesses. As reported, NOAA’s latest assessment, issued on 13 August, says El Niño is strengthening and there is now a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during the Northern Hemisphere autumn and winter of 2026–27. NOAA estimates a 69% chance that the October–December event could reach historically exceptional strength. (Trump administration sharply downsized the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) So what does this mean for Thailand? The biggest concern is water – Thailand’s water conservation policies are archaic – from the 1950s and 60s due largely to the policies of the Royally-Initiated Projects on Water Resources Management leaving Thailand particularly vulnerable because agriculture consumes around 75% of the country's water, while more than 80% of cultivated land is outside formal irrigation areas and therefore depends heavily on rainfall. According to Krungthai COMPASS, usable water in central-region dams was already around 28% as of 6 June, below the 30% level considered critical. This matters enormously for the Central Plains, where rice production depends on reliable supplies of irrigation water. Industrial demands are increasing exponentially especially in the EEC region of govern-backed industrial development. The Eastern Economic Corridor could also face increasing competition for water between industry, agriculture and communities. Rice could take the biggest hit – Thailand is the 2nd biggest Thai exporter in the world after India – so global prices will be affected. The economic numbers are potentially serious. El Nino is not restricted to being an annual event – it can last a lot longer; an El Niño lasting from the second half of 2026 into mid-2027 could cause approximately THB62 billion in agricultural losses, equivalent to around 0.31% of GDP. Rice is expected to be the biggest casualty. The base-case estimate is for Thai rice production to fall by around 5.4 million tonnes, with losses of approximately THB43 billion. Sugarcane too, could lose around 12 million tonnes of production, while cassava could fall by around 3.1 million tonnes. This isn't simply a problem for farmers.Lower production means less income in rural communities, higher raw-material costs for food processors and rice mills, and potentially higher food prices for consumers. Heat! - Thailand could become much hotter El Niño does not guarantee a particular temperature in every location, but it can significantly shift the odds towards hotter and drier conditions in Southeast Asia. Thailand could therefore see prolonged periods of extreme heat, with "feels-like" temperatures potentially reaching around 50°C in the worst conditions, particularly when very high humidity combines with high air temperatures. That has obvious implications for anyone working outdoors — construction workers, agricultural workers, delivery riders, street vendors and others….and tourists! Heat stress and heatstroke become much greater concerns when extreme temperatures persist for days rather than hours. There is another consequence: air-conditioning demand rises sharply, putting additional pressure on Thailand's already fragile electricity system and household budgets. Drought can also mean more fires and PM2.5 – air quality will need to be monitored carefully - Hot, dry conditions create much better conditions for forest and agricultural fires that spread out of control. That could make Thailand's seasonal PM2.5 problem even worse, particularly in northern provinces where burning and dry vegetation are already recurring problems. So El Niño isn't necessarily just about "no rain". It can produce a much more complicated pattern of weather — prolonged dry periods punctuated by sudden, intense storms. That means Thailand can experience drought and flash flooding in the same broader period. The economic effects go far beyond agriculture. The first impact may be felt in farming, but the knock-on effects could spread through the wider economy. Farm incomes are expected to fall, reducing purchasing power in rural areas. Food manufacturers face higher raw-material costs. Rice mills could see their margins squeezed. Consumers could face higher food prices. Then electricity demand could rise as temperatures increase, and businesses that depend on reliable water supplies — particularly agriculture, food processing and parts of the industrial sector — could face difficult decisions about how to allocate increasingly scarce water. the Super El Niño problem isn't just a farmers' problem... Thai expert, marine ecologist Assistant Professor Dr Thon Thamrongnawasawat of Kasetsart University, has described a four-stage progression: 1 - June–July: relatively normal conditions, although temperatures and weather variability may increase. 2 - August–October: rainfall begins to decline and dry conditions become more noticeable. 3- November–January: the heat and dryness intensify, with increasing pressure on water supplies. 4 - February–June: the accumulated effects could become most serious, with water shortages, extreme heat and major agricultural and environmental impacts. The timing is particularly important because the worst consequences may not arrive when El Niño itself is at its strongest. The water crisis can build progressively as reservoirs are depleted. We also don’t know when it will finish. What can Thailand do? The obvious answer is better water management — but the window for preparation is becoming smaller… and they don’t have a record of ecologically sound decisions in this field. Farmers will be asked to reduce water consumption, use drought-resistant varieties and techniques such as Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), and adjust planting schedules where possible. Businesses should look at water recycling, reserve supplies and securing agricultural raw materials. The government faces the much bigger challenge of managing water between farmers, households, cities and industry while also preparing for heat, fires and possible food-price increases. As for ordinary residents, the practical advice is fairly simple: conserve water, prepare for periods of extreme heat, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and pay attention to heat-related symptoms. With intermittent water supplies people are going to invest in extra home storage tanks which in turn will lead to strain on demands. The bigger question for Thailand - El Niño is a natural climate cycle. It will eventually weaken at some point, but the effects are exacerbated by climate change. Thailand's vulnerability is increasing because the country is dealing with climate change, rising temperatures, competing demands for water and an economy still heavily exposed to agriculture. The question therefore isn't simply "Will Thailand get a Super El Niño?", the more important question may be:"Is Thailand prepared for what happens if it does?" With NOAA now warning of a potentially very strong “super” El Niño and Thai economic researchers estimating more than THB62 billion in agricultural damage, the answer could have significant consequences for Thailand's farmers, food prices, businesses, electricity demand and water security well into 2027 and even beyond.
