PATTAYA — Portions of Pattaya were flooded Thursday morning when a weakening tropical storm hit the seaside tourist city.

After about an hour of heavy rain, several roads in Pattaya City southeast of Bangkok in Chonburi province were left under up to 60 centimeters of water, impeding traffic.

That's the tropics for you. Plenty in SE Asia will cop for a lot worse, not to mention USA and Carribean.

Can't imagine what would happen if a real typhoon hit the place, most likely the whole place will become airborn.

Don't worry if it did the Junta would request International emergency aid to bolster their already overflowing offshore bank accounts

I got to experience Super Typhoon Jebi last week as it rolled through Osaka.  It was quite the experience.  Half the beer bars in Pattaya would be destroyed with a direct hit of a real typhoon.

Well I guess you could also stupidly say that a volcanic eruption in Pattaya would destroy the beer bars to , but that is not going to happen either

sorry but the Typhoon is just hitting the coast of the Northern most part of  Vietnam right now. It is no where near Pattaya. :cheesy:

Feel free to correct me if I am mistaken, but I seem to remember when one of the cronies of Thailand's ruling Military Junta got the job as Pattaya Mayor. Did he not make certain assurances, along the lines of "we are on the case" and "flooding in Pattaya will soon be a thing of the past"?

Yes he did but to be fair every Mayor before him in my memory has made the same statement. Strangely they have all ended up not meeting that commitment but very wealthy.

You are talking about a different storm, read the story.

We had over 40 mm of rain here next to cha-am ,it was welcome.

Not much rain yet over here.

oh dear there goes the second new beach and that's only this year

I am talking about Tropical Storm Barijat which I have been tracking for two days. Tropical Storm Barijat is currently 733 kilometers from Pattaya.

"when a weakening tropical storm hit the seaside tourist city". No tropical storm hit Pattaya.  I was just making a joke but the unstable weather is caused by the low pressure of Barijat and Super Typhoon Mangkhut causing some of this rain.

Yes we got slammed here in Hua Hin and watched the rain on radar today come down from the northwest.

Typhoon Mangkhut is headed for Hong Kong and mainland China Sunday. Forecasts show heavy rain ahead of the storm might hit northern Thailand.

What's the best place to buy wellies locally; size 9 or 10?

And a decent brolly; not one of those rubbish ones that turn inside-out every time a bar-girl sneezes.

I suspect the Beach Renourishment effort would be relocated to 2nd avenue. ?

Here's an excellent site to watch the weather essentially live as it happens worldwide.

Have been using this for a few years already, the forecast feature helps with my daily activities planning ? I just wish the bloody BKK rain radar page would not go down so often.

People in charge are not intelligent enough to fix the city so that it doesn't flood after even a little bit of rain. Is flooding inevitable?!

The City Manager should resign as incompetent. Storm drainage is not rocket science !

Only pattata floods after every rain , no need for typhoon. If a real typhoon hit and it rained for a whole day most town would be underwater totally .

i recall about 4 years ago it rained for half a day , water at my house was up to 1 meter high and not a single rescue or assistance team during or after

Well if that was a weakening tropical storm i hope we never get a real one here in Pattaya ,it was the worst storm i have seen in 25 years . and our cat was not happy either .

There was flooding?  Where?  I walked all over today and all along the beach and had no clue until I read this post.  What does that Typhoon have to do with it?  It is nowhere near Thailand.
