PHUKET: A 30-year-old boat mechanic died yesterday when he got neck trapped in the boats engine while carrying out routine maintenance on the vessel.

At 7:30pm yesterday (Sept 24) Chalong Police was notified that a body had been found inside the engine compartment of the Blueket catamaran docked at Chalong Pier.

Lt Col Khanan Somrak from the Chalong Police together with other officers, Phuket Ramjai Rescue Foundation members and officials from the Tourist Assistance Centre arrived at the scene to find the body of boat mechanic Wanchai Yuttasang, 30, inside the engine compartment with his neck stuck in the boat’s engine.

Horrible way to go, although can't imagine exactly how that happens?

I live in the central plains of Thailand so I have no clue what the boat owners might do.

  1. Call in the monks?
  2. Find a new mechanic?
  3. Sell the boat cheap?

Just curious.

His shirt or something he was wearing around his neck got caught in a pulley or flywheel or similar I would guess.

So he stuck his head in while the engine was running, not a good idea.

So how DO you make adjustments to an engine when it is running, if you don't or can't see it without sticking your head into the compartment?

...and guys like him are in charge for the safety inspections of tourist boats?

Oh I understand but I didn't ask if he was a member of the elite maintenance experts force, I asked "guys like him".

call in the Longneck doctor?

Many moons ago I was involved in the West Australian crayfishing (lobster) industry and it was not uncommon that guys were seriously hurt or killed attending to engine problems.  Below decks is a very confined area with belts and pulleys running everywhere to drive things such as winches and bilge pumps etc.  The usual cause was loose flapping wet weather gear or aprons getting caught up somewhere and the victim pulled in.  And ,as someone else mentioned earlier, it is often difficult to find a fault with the engine turned off.

Thais don't need silly Health and Safety.

I hear what you say and the fatality was  not nice but there is something that does not ring true here as it mentions he was undertaking routine maintenance. Really ? in Thailand ? More likely the poor guy was just trying to fix a problem without any safety precautions.

Major bummer rip to the mechanic catamarans are very confined spaces not much room in the engine room probably got his hair caught up and pulled in very sad hope  it was quick

From the link:  "...Police believe that Mr Wanchai slipped and fell while entering the engine compartment causing him to fall onto the engine and get his neck caught."

An easy thing to do on a boat with wet decks and perhaps oil and grease from the engine in that area.
