China says trade war to 'certainly' hurt U.S. exporters, create opportunities to others

BEIJING (Reuters) - China is being forced to retaliate against the United States in their trade dispute, and U.S. exporters including suppliers of liquefied natural gas would "certainly" be hurt, said Chinese vice commerce minister Wang Shouwen.

But Beijing's retaliation would provide opportunities to other LNG-exporting countries, Wang said at a press conference on Tuesday, adding that Australia is an important source of the fuel for China.

The United States and China imposed fresh tariffs on each other's goods on Monday as the world's two biggest economies showed no signs of backing down from an increasingly bitter trade dispute that is expected to hit global economic growth.

Beijing said it was willing to restart trade negotiations with Washington if the talks are "based on mutual respect and equality," according to a white paper on the dispute published by the State Council, or cabinet, on Monday.

The United States stands to gain more from Sino-U.S. trade, China's international trade representative Fu Ziying, said at the same press conference.

While China has a trade surplus with the United States, it's the latter that has a profit surplus with China, said Fu, who is also a vice commerce minister.

Many people worldwide still hold the opinion that they are dealing with coolies.

Those days are long gone.

These days they have all graduated with honours from Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard etc..

I think that most of the world realizes this-it's only the inhabitants of 'Toy Story 3' that appear to be unable to grasp the fact that throwing someone's tea in the harbour may not be a viable option in the 21st century.

No actually, it is the post that sumises this Presidency.

China had it good for a long time with the massive trade deficit with the US.

Ultimately, it had to end - both sides knew it - but no-one would do anything about it before.

I see everything that's been done so far as short term negotiating tactics.

I hear a lot about Trumps ham-fisted approach to this but not many alternatives.

That's right. There will be a lot of pain to go around, as in any trade war, but China has a lot more to lose in this scenario than the US does.

Its amazing to see the novices up early bagging Trump because they don't understand the real issues. 1 USA will not accept a massive trade deficeit from a country that manipulates its economy with chinese walls to keep foreign companies out.

2. Supply lines for essentials like tyres & engine parts, electronics must come back to USA for security & defence purposes.

3. China has moved toward an authoritarian model with a single dictator and suppression of its people ( a la fascism ( national socialism ).

4. China is building up massive military and does not respect freedom of passage and is preparing for war to invade democratic & free Taiwan.

5. Cambodia is the future of south east asia with puppet governments controlled by Beijing.

6.  ...and if you think the Han overlords are going to treat you nicely then ask the Tibetans & Uighers what they think.

7. If you really love freedom of thought and speaking your mind and love to criticize the government, and love china please do everybody a favour and move there. They have a special camp for people like you.

For the record i love China & its people but they deserve to be free.
