BANGKOK, 27 September 2018 (NNT) - Thailand's Election Commission (EC) has given a lecture to educate provincial governors and local administrators on facilitating the appointment of Senators and the election of Members of the House of Representatives.

EC Chairman Ittiporn Boonprakong clarified the process to appoint senators, where the country will propose 200 candidates from 10 occupations for the NCPO to appoint. Based on related legislation, the application period will begin no later than December 5th.

The applicants will then be screened by selection committees at the district level on December 30th this year, the provincial level on January 6th, 2019 and at the national level on January 16th. The process will produce 200 candidates from 10 occupations for the NCPO to select 50 senators by January 22nd.

Meanwhile, laws related to the election of Members of the House of Representatives will take effect on December 11th this year with the elections taking place within 150 days or by May 9th, 2019. In the meantime, the EC is in the process of receiving input from the general public as well as political parties on electoral districts, which are expected to be drawn up by November 10th this year.

As for local elections, related legislation is expected to take effect in December this year and local polls will take place 90 days after the general election.

Well, it's refreshing at long last to hear of such a vibrant grass roots process being followed to select the country's senior lawmakers. A process absolutely grounded in an unbending determination to enshrine the will of the people (or the ones that matter anyway) at the very heart of such decisions.

How much more sophisticated a method of recognising the needs and of meeting the challenges of ensuring that the people (or some of them anyway) are properly represented than the antiquated and laughably crude idea of resorting to the banal simplicity of a ballot!

Yet, many still can't see the real problem.

Don't look behind curtain - nothing to see.

The Election Commission, with no election yet to organise, uses it close association with the military who formed it to 'advice' others on who is best selected to be senators. I would suggest a name change to the Assembly for Senatorial Selection, the acronym would be self explanatory.

That doesn't mean that the winds of change can't or shouldn't blow.

When they do blow they may blow aside the curtain, revealing...
