BANGKOK, 8th October 2018 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha is delighted with Thailand being lifted off CITES' blacklist on illegal ivory trade.

Thailand was once one of eight countries enlisted as having active problems or being a route for African ivory poaching. Last year, the committee upgraded Thailand's status to a country with primary concerns.

The exit of Thailand from the NIAP process resulted from successful measures of the government to prevent and suppress African ivory poaching, following the 2015 enactment of a law on the issue.

Improvements have been made to the identification and registration protocols for pet elephants, as well as the enhancement of suppression operations for ivory poaching movements that use Thailand as a smuggling route.

Needs to think about the black panther list too - and the illegal killing of them.
