SEOUL (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was ready to allow international inspectors into the North's nuclear and missile testing sites, one of the main sticking points over an earlier denuclearisation pledge.

Pompeo, who met Kim during a short trip to Pyongyang on Sunday, said the inspectors would visit a missile engine test facility and the Punggye-ri nuclear testing site as soon as the two sides agree on logistics.

"There's a lot of logistics that will be required to execute that," Pompeo told a news briefing in Seoul before leaving for Beijing.

The top U.S. diplomat also said both sides were "pretty close" to agreement on the details of a second summit, which Kim proposed to U.S. President Donald Trump in a letter last month.

Trump and Kim held an historic first summit in Singapore in June.

Pompeo's trip to Pyongyang, his fourth this year, followed a stalemate as North Korea resisted Washington's demands for irreversible steps to give up its nuclear arsenal, including a complete inventory of its weapons and facilities.

He told South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Sunday his latest trip to Pyongyang was "another step forward" to denuclearisation but there are "many steps along the way".

In a more upbeat note, Pyongyang's state media said on Monday Kim lauded his talks with Pompeo.

"Kim Jong Un expressed satisfaction over the productive and wonderful talks with Mike Pompeo at which mutual stands were fully understood and opinions exchanged," North Korean news agency KCNA said.

It said the two sides agreed to hold working negotiations for the second North Korean-U.S. summit as early as possible.

SMILES, HANDSHAKES

Commenting on Pompeo's meeting with Kim, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Monday Kim was expected to visit Russia soon. He said Chinese leader Xi Jinping was also expected to travel to North Korea but did not elaborate further.

North Korea's state newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, featured eight photos of the meeting on its front page, including shots of Kim and Pompeo smiling and shaking hands, as well as some with Kim's sister Kim Yo Jong.

"Together with Mike Pompeo, Kim Jong Un appreciated the positively developing situation on the Korean peninsula, explained in detail the proposals for solving the denuclearisation issue and matters of concern of both sides and exchanged constructive opinions," KCNA said.

North Korea denounced Pompeo on his previous trip to Pyongyang in July for making "gangster-like demands". Pompeo did not meet Kim on that trip.

Kim said he believed the dialogue between the two countries would continue to develop favourably, "based on the deep confidence between the two leaders of the two countries", and expressed gratitude to Trump for making a sincere effort to implement the agreement made at their June summit, KCNA said.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement Kim had invited inspectors to visit the Punggye-ri nuclear test site to confirm it had been irreversibly dismantled. The statement did not provide further details.

KCNA did not mention that issue.

Very positive step towards peace in East Asia. Long road to go but Trump has progressed more in two years than the last three administrations did in 24. Nobel Peace Prize? Democrats’ heads exploding?

For Kim?

i Would agree that it’s pretty impressive to see such a young leader, step away from the position of his ancestors, and reach out in an attempt to bring lasting peace and prosperity to his country.... but I would think it premature to suggest he win that award, just yet, given that previous administrations have been down this road before, and it might all be “fake news”

but hey... here’s hoping....

But what are the Americans willing to give in return?

What? You do not know? The US will accept a complete denuclearisation themselves in exchange and are ready to allow North Korean inspectors into the  USA nuclear and missile testing sites, one of the main sticking points over an earlier US of A denuclearisation pledge

And there's plenty more including the several year moratorium on missile testing which was part of the Agreed Framework.

Agreed framework was a farce. Gallucci admitted NK cheated the entire time.

You would think Clinton, educated in the U.K., would have remembered this:  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_for_our_time

Trump won’t settle for a piece of paper.

It’s always entertaining when you have to explain someone’s own link, to them

and now, more ridiculously, I see the same poster equating 1930s international politics, to politics today.... and... even if there is a glimmer of similarities, it’s worth noting that the major belligerant then was Germany, whereas now it’s arguably the USA.

First off, i noticed that you didn't address the other points. In addition what we know now isn't what we knew then.

As for Trump not settling for a piece of paper, remember how he hyped the absolutely vacant agreement that was signed at the end of the first summit with Kim?

"The problem is solved" and "there is no longer a threat."

In fact, Trump is now in thrall to Kim since for political reasons he needs to have the public believe that the ongoing talks are making progress. But this is what happens when a President puts his prestige on the line.  So stupid to do that for a very very very preliminary negotiation. Especially in light of North Korea's past conduct. Which you invoke to cast discredit on others but ignore in the case of Trump.
