Luang Prabang to Chiang Rai

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Am thinking about a bit of an overland trek. Bangkok to Luang Prabang but then coming back via Chiang Rai.

Has anyone ever driven that particular stretch? Any advice?

many thanks.

Yes. I know this thread is very old, but I've done it.

Bangkok to Luang Prabang I've done in one day, though it's very lengthy. Luang Prabang to Chiang Rai can be traversed via Luang Nam Tha and Huay Xai to exit for Chiang Khong. Road heading north out of LP is OK, quite good (for now) after recent upgrade from Pak Mong to Udomxai, but narrow and increasingly <deleted> from there to Nateuy. Nateuy to Huay Xai varies from potholed, full of ruts to smooth. Lots of Chinese trucks coming and going due to the high-speed railway construction. Best to go during the dry season, wet season conditions can be a bit slick though nothing very bad.
