Prayut urged to take action against Nonthaburi hotel's Nazi-themed room

An international Jewish human rights organisation has urged Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha to take action against a hotel in Nonthaburi to change its Nazi-themed room immediately.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center on Thursday issued a press release calling on Prayut to sanction the Love Villa Hotel for creating a “Communist” room, complete with a large mural of Adolf Hitler.

The news of the room went viral this past week and sparked outrage from Jewish groups worldwide.

In a letter to Prayut, Rabbi Abraham Cooper, the Center’s associate dean and director of Global Social Action, denounced the hotel's room as “a profound desecration of the memory of six million Jews murdered by Hitler’s Nazi Third Reich and millions of other victims who perished at the hands of the Nazis.

“Simply put, there is no excuse in 2018, for such a “tourist” hotel room anywhere in the world to exist. That it exists in Thailand is a stain on your nation and its tourism industry,” said Cooper.

Cooper has visited Thailand on a number of occasions, bringing the Wiesenthal Center’s “Courage To Remember” Holocaust exhibit to Bangkok and to participate in UN-sponsored programs on International Holocaust Memorial Day.

He urged Prayut to directly intervene “to have this hotel sanctioned and its owner instructed to change the ugly and insulting room immediately”.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is one of the largest international Jewish human rights organisations in the world with over 400,000 member families in the United States.

I highly doubt if more than 1% of Thais even know about Hitler and what happened {snipped}

I'd agree with you on that.

Decades ago the first Thai girlfriend I had was the first person I ever knew who hadn't heard of Hitler.

Having said that, she had heard of WW2, as her parents remembered the Japanese marching through their village in the north, on their way to Burma.

I definitely support this headline. If no one else is going to suggest to the "thai gov't" to do something about this disgusting hotel situation, then I'm real happy it came from Israel.

Would a 'Stalin' themed hotel cause less hoo haa? The guy killed millions as well....but maybe with the loony left so enamored with socialism and its nastier brother communism it wouldnt raise an eyebrow......oh and good ole 'Che' such a hero....so many t-shirts...so many smelly armpits.

Bizarrely, that "Hammer and Sickle" was part of the original decor:

Maybe they ran out of swastikas?

Why?  Most Thais have no historical knowledge so what is considered 'inappropriate' by the ADL is simply a design to most Thais.
"But Thais need to be sensitive."
Makes me wonder how may jewish people use a image of Buddha in a manner that would cause condemnation by Thais.

I often run out of swastikas. When it happens I superglue my eyelids shut, cover my feet in maple syrup and let my neighbours cat lick it off....thats just me though.

Hitler, obviously not a nice chap and I wouldn't want a picture of him in my room but then again my schooling included WW2. What can the PM do, change the education system to include world events? If that happened then Thais might realise the world is bigger than the Chinese empire. Is there any Thai law stating that people can't display pictures of Hitler? Or is this the Israeli thing that if you say anything against the state of Israel you're anti semetic.

LOL... since the aptly named Love Villa Hotel is a typical, suburban, Thai hot-sheet motel, I seriously doubt that any genuine tourists, let alone Jewish ones, are ever going to be personally affronted by what is basically something kitsch created by an interior designer with bad taste.

Profound desecration my ass.

If a hotel wants to have a Nazi themed room then let them. Let the free market of ideas dictate whether the free market of CASH supports the idea. Too many luvvies around these days that think government should be our daddies. Let people think for themselves....I want to KNOW where the idiots are!!! Dont hide them away from me for my own good!

Another article by Khaosod English from October 7th said, that the Hitler image was removed...
NONTHABURI LOVE HOTEL REMOVES HITLER MURAL

Quote

The employee said they spotted a couple of farang men going to inspect the room Wednesday. Soon after, district administration officials and soldiers arrived at the hotel and asked that the image be removed, he added.

Here we go.  Shouldn't Thais be asking the leader of this country to do something about this?  <gasp>  images.jpeg.ca86ad58384556c2677ce298ab82f0ae.jpeg

The answer? "No".  Why?  Because what is offensive to one culture isn't offensive to others, and trying to police it is ridiculous.  Would I have this in my bathroom?  No, I'm a Buddhist.  Am I offended in any way?  No.  Life and let live.

Not having English (or another major language) is huge disadvantage which results in an abbreviated version of the internet. At least if they had that it would help fill in the gaps in the present educational system.

This is wikipedia thai pages on Adolf Hitler and holocaust https://th.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/อดอล์ฟ_ฮิตเลอร์

There's enough information. They simply do not read.

I was at Khaosan Rd last week and was surprised to see a street vendor selling Adolf Hitler T-shirts on open display and only 200m from the police station..

I think most Thais, including the police, wouldn't have any clue of who this guy was, and the world's hatred of the man responsible for the atrocities and killing of 6 million Jews, all be it from over 70 yrs ago..

The Thais unfortunately have little education on the world outside of Thailand, as it was never part of their learning curriculum..

In am sure he has more important things to worry about that a right wing lobbyist group jumping on the bandwagon.

Bad taste -yes but who else is caught up in this angst? Why should the Thais's change their education system to suit an agenda.

We know bad things happened but it wasn't just the Red Sea Pedestrians affected, although they don't like to be reminded of that.

Cues accusations of being anti-semitic for not beating my chest and wailing over the issue.

There is a subtle difference between religion and genocide. The use of Hitler images is pure ignorance and a lack of education. Best thing to do is to explain how Hitler thought about Asians.

they say that ignorance and stupidity are not sicnesses, and therefore has no cure, comments such as these and another poster who says ' i don't care what people think of me coz i'm too old' (and still posts vigorously on social media) are the causes of what is wrong with this world, idea and knowledge that still stuck in the middle ages, jews killed jesus, jews are mean money hoarders shylock, jews kill christians babies and uses their blood for the passover bread....

Calm down , it was a joke . Religions are the root to most wars , shouldn't be necessary in 2018.

I agree with others here, who feel sympathy for what happened to the Jewish and other people all those years ago but just hang on a moment ...

WHO has given the “YIDDISH STORM TROOPERS” the right to dictate to Private Enterprise in THAILAND as to what that enterprise, may or may not display in PRIVATE ROOMS?

Perhaps the Good Jewish complainants, might first have a grizzle about what the BURMESE are doing with their copying of the tactics of Hitler and his Goons !

Oh SORRY, this time it’s Muslims who are Victims of these tactics, so I suppose that MUST be okay in the eyes of the Jewish Human Rights Centre ?
