Cabinet has set up a committee to develop villages and communities under the sufficiency economy

The Cabinet has set up a committee to develop villages and communities under the sufficiency economy philosophy and to promote the well-being of public members.

Deputy Prime Minister and Industry Minister Kosit Panpiemras said the Cabinet has appointed him as the chairman of this committee to link the government’s well-being policy and His Majesty the King’s sufficiency economy philosophy. The committee will help develop villages and communities, and the operation will be managed in a transparent manner.

The committee will carry on the SML project from the past government as the project deems beneficial and generates revenues to the general public. However, the committee will also try to solve poverty problems by adjusting the work direction and ensuring that communities are self-sufficient.

The budget of this project is about ten billion baht, and the details will be discussed in the Cabinet meeting over the next two to three weeks.

10 billion baht for self-sufficiency?

seems like it may take a while before the system can pay it off and be truly self-sufficient, probably using public debt like the previous administration's populist schemes?

i attended a talk by Dr Meechai (of condom use fame) a couple years back and he had some pretty well developed ideas for promoting indeginous industry through collaboration with private enterprise, a model that is modular and therefore scalable with measurable short term ROE that companies can understand. it was sort of an agricultural adaptation of the now famous Grameen Bank micro credit model.

micro credit is not bad if it is well administered and users are properly educated on its use. being self-sufficient on a large scale requires a sustainable outside commercial angle, otherwise its just communism.

Actually, not communism, but *autonomism-anarchism*.

Which is a rather idiotic idea, even more unrealistic as a theory put in practice than most forms of communism. This idea is pretty strong here both under the left and the right wing, and easily plays into the hand of ideas of "Thai uniqeness".

May you life in interesting times... :o

I saw a small factory in a village making fuel from palm oil for the tractors (pickups??), just for the village, but don't know if that runs under the self sufficiency idea.

With my limited understanding of basic economics, it would seem that the self-sufficiency economic idea is attractive on the small scale. It may even be attractive at a national level because of its 'green' credentials; something that this world is crying out for.

As with most economic models, the results will probably be a cobbling together of a variety of techniques. In all this experimentation I just hope that those most disadvantaged really do get a stake in all of this, and feel as though they can improve their living and lifestyles, if they choose to!
