webfact
Ex-actor gets bail in case over unlicensed dental services By Kesinee Taengkhieo The Nation Exactor Kanin Bhatia, 32, wears a facemask as he is escorted to a Bangkok court to apply for a detention order yesterday. Photo Korbphuk Phromrekha FORMER ACTOR Kanin Bhatia, who has been accused of operating a dental clinic and providing dental services without a proper licence, was yesterday granted bail on a Bt300,000 guarantee. The 32-year-old ex-actor, who has maintained his innocence, was ordered to report to court on December 11. Kanin was presented at Bangkok’s Ratchadapisek Crimi-nal Court to apply for the first 12-day detention period (October 24 to November 4) as the ongoing police probe requires interviews with five more witnesses and is awaiting forensic results. Kanin was arrested at a Chatuchak clinic on Monday following public complaints over allegedly falsely portraying himself as a dentist and providing services. Police said his claim to be a dentist was false as he had reportedly failed to graduate from Rangsit University’s Faculty of Dental Medicine where he had studied a decade ago. Kanin’s lawyer, Seksan Senachu, insisted the former actor had graduated from a university in the Philippines and was in the process of getting a licence from Thai authorities. Rangsit Faculty of Dental Medicine dean Suchada Vuddhakanok revealed that Kanin, who also worked as an actor while in his second and third years in university, had repeated and completed the required courses on theory. He was in clinical training in the first semester of his sixth year when a scandal broke out. When it was found that a lecturer’s signatures on his patients’ records were not authentic, the faculty launched a probe which then found that 70 related signatures were allegedly forged. It led to the university expelling him in 2012, she said, but the “retiring” process took time. Kanin has a transcript with the yet-to-be-corrected grades to continue his studies in the Philippines.
