GENEVA (Reuters) - Thailand has failed to comply with a World Trade Organization ruling against its regulations on cigarette imports, a WTO dispute panel said on Monday, the first of two legal cases brought to the Geneva-based watchdog by the Philippines.

Either side can appeal the ruling, which concerned valuation of cigarettes imported by Philip MorrisThailand Limited from Philip Morris subsidiaries in the Philippines and Indonesia.

if thailand could be considered as a single person, that person would be 50 years old and up , and from a generation, as it's current decison-makers all are, that doesnt particularly abide rules and order that it doesnt itself make for it's own self-interest

They'll find a way around this mandate.

Watch and learn.

I don't think it can be declared a mandate, espcially given either side can appeal the ruling.

In the end Thailand will be the big loser... it's taking it's protectionist policies to far

surrounding countries in the end will all trade together & stuff Thailand

ASEAN will be the biggest test for cross border fair trade policies..

Talk about a complete lack of substance in a news article.  Where's the meat?

That (presumably) had to do with the very big duty free company trying to import cigs through "gray" channels (i.e. not through the official distributor). It looks as if the country did help a (meanwhile) dead billionaire, and the WTO apparently disagrees.

Just do like Trump/US and say "SCREW WTO, UN and the rest of you, if it's not good for US, then we refuse to follow the ruling!"...

Thailand invented that stance a very long time ago and Trump learned it from them !

Excellent. And because it's not Trump and the US of A, watch what the world will do to them, even if the other side is Philip Morris and is considered to be both leprous and toxic. Thailand does not have the gonads for a fight like this; watch how fast they capitulate and try to make it look like a victory.
