BANGKOK, 13th November 2018 (NNT) - The Ministry of Commerce is set to take action against the smuggling of palm oil from other countries.

Following reports of attempts to smuggle palm oil from Malaysia into Thailand for sale at local shops and government-sponsored Blue Flag stores in the southern border region, Minister of Commerce Sontirat Sontijirawong, promptly ordered related agencies to investigate and remove any such local stores sponsored by the Blue Flag project from the program.

Mr. Sontirat said that the Department of Internal Trade has been ordered to conduct a rigorous probe into the matter and to launch legal action against those found guilty of involvement in any such crime.

Regarding attempts to rectify the problem of the falling palm oil price, the minister said that the Ministry of Commerce, is to propose a set of measures for Cabinet approval at this week’s meeting, which should help eliminate around 160,000 metric tons of oil palm from production and accordingly help drive the price of palm oil up.

Meanwhile, former MPs for the Democrat Party in the southern region have submitted a petition to the government to suggest a number of measures to help rubber growers, including a push to use more locally-produced rubber, and business matching with buyers from other countries.
