Generals observe a military parade in Bangkok on Sep. 28, 2018.

BANGKOK — A transparency activist on Friday slammed plans to increase salaries for top military brass.

Saying Thailand has more than enough generals, Srisuwan Janya urged the interim parliament to instead focus on helping farmers who are suffering from a drop in crop prices. The lawmakers are set to debate the bill today.

"Srisuwan said he would file a complaint with the national anti-graft agency against any lawmaker who votes in favor of the salary increase."

Sadly I can see him as a prime candidate for a re-education camp attitude adjustment soon.

If he avoids that, I'm sure the thought police will charge him with something creative, like 'eating a sandwich with political intent'. That worked before:

... military experts believe the total number of Thai generals could be more than 1,000. That’s more than the United States military’s 886 generals, despite having thrice the number of troops.

The Thai military has more than 1,750 flag officers (generals and admirals), a bloated number for a military of its size. By comparison, the US military as of April 2011 had 964 flag officers for a force several times the size of Thailand's.

Shouldn't need an activist to see the total waste of money on the way too big military brass. Just needs an activist to express that opinion in these days of fear over imprisonment. To answer

One of the biggest problems for Thailand is their grossly bloated staff of Generals and Admirals.  As mentioned by others, they have nearly double what the U.S. has, but with a military one fifth the size.  Thailand is not, and never has been, a democracy or republic, but is a military state.  Until they can overcome and correct this, they will never be a 1st World Country.

Those generals see this as an insult that their salaries were exposed. It’s only less than 10% of their real salaries.

Their official salaries are just chunk change lunch money compared to the large amounts they rake in from other sources. What the generals should be doing is bumping up the minimum wage for average Thais, especially with an election just around the corner...maybe. This just looks bad.

When these flag officers retire they should become economists/financial advisors for LOS to show Thailand how to achieve new heights.

"The bill, which would increase monthly pay for five-star generals in all military branches by 5 percent from 72,965 baht to 76,604 baht".

They really know how to handle money.

They get enough pay already judging by the immens wealth they seem to collect during their years of duty.

Not sure how they do it with 75k a month, but at retirement you can own billions.

Ya, right!!!! Like that's their real monthly income.... :cheesy:

Why waste so much taxpayer money permanently. For each a wristwatch from Patpong Market should be enough.

I wonder how many of these so-called generals are laughing their butts off over a salary increase of roughly 3,600 baht per month. I mean, even their current official salary of 72,965 is but a tiny fraction of what they really earn month after month under the table.

Sure....

To be expected within the confines of base militaristic rule and oligarchical associations. They receive the largest share, as they see themselves [and promoted thereof] as benign and benevolent.

Are we just waking up to this realization?

As it's been of this nature for decades.

Yet, all of a sudden, these and related topics are news [to many].

Wannabe pundits need not apply, as the story line and theoretical analysis has been hashed-out seemingly forever.

An old tale that has become redundant.

Thus another reson the military is not leaving the government anytime soon, or a slight possibility that they realize they might be leaving soon, thus this is the best time to give themselves a pay raise

they could something usefull like picking garbage off the beach...

Do you think they will care about that?

In their view a "General Election" is going to be just that regardless.

Largely, an annoying thorn in their side.

Not to worry - they'll figure something out that favours their classes.

I didn't say anything about them caring about anything...and probably obviously not. My post was an observational one mixed with a little matter-of-fact. Nothing too judgmental in it. What you are bringing up is subjective...so fair enough.

I think my attempt at humour has been missed.

GENERAL election.

I should have added some smileys!????

Did they win any famous battles yet (not the ones killing their own citizens) ?

At this salary range they could at least meet the requirements for a retirement visa if they wouldn't be Thai nationals. Wonder how they pay their cars ... and watches?

Seems reasonable, given the phenomenal intensity of the almost constant operational deployment of the armed forces, and the renowned professionalism and inspirational leadership of the senior officers concerned...

They could send 8000 of them to Uthai Thani to supervise the soi dogs.
