Hi everyone...

I will be traveling to Thailand in April and will be bringing my girl friend and her family some gifts. Things like maple syrup, wild rice and a few other things my girl friend wanted (vanilla scented car freshners...I know, I thought it odd...must not be able to get there). Would these be things I would need to declare?

I read on a website: "goods which are brought into the country in a limited quantity as personal effects and are not for a commercial purpose" would be subject to duty charges. So I am assuming I would need to declare these things.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Assuming you're not bringing in stupid quantities, just stick them in your checked baggage and walk on through the green channel.

I seriously doubt that customs would be remotely interested in any of the stuff you mention.

BTW Isn't bringing rice to Thailand a bit like sending coal to Newcastle?

Thanks for the replies...I appreciate it.

Crossy...wild rice isn't actually rice. It's a seed from an aquatic grass with a completely unique flavor. The reason for my thoughts on bringing some is because it grows in large quantities around here. The Native Americans have been harvesting it here for over a thousand years, so it's something "special" about my home area I guess.

Provided the quantities are for personal use just bring what you want and go through the green channel however parcels of white powder could cause you a bit of a delay if they saw it :D

Advise leaving the Bow and Arrows at home too :o

if you are bringing several of this same item pack them in the different suitcases or 'spread' them inside the suitcase - they do often xray luggage and might just confiscate for themselves (happened to me in don muang)

your genius?

Whose genius? Who said anything about anybody’s genius?

Maestro

Obviously Oscar Wilde never made it to Switzerland, maestro. Leisurely is referring to a famous incident when Wilde arrived in New York to begin a famous speaking tour in the 1890s.

NY Customs Inspector: "Do you have anything to declare, Mr Wilde?"

Oscar: "I have nothing to declare, except my genius."
