November 18, 20187 yr Three million people added to social welfare card program Tik Netikamjorn BANGKOK, 17 November 2018, (NNT) - More than 3.1 million people including the elderly, the disabled, and bed-ridden patients have been enrolled in the government’s social welfare card scheme. Finance Ministry spokesperson Lavaron Sangsnit announced that between May and June this year, there were a total of 4.5 million welfare card applications, of which 3.1 million have been approved. Applicants can visit epayment.go.th to see if their requests have been endorsed, or call the Ministry of Interior’s Thai Niyom Yangyuen Center at 0 2629 8306, the Comptroller General's Department at 0 2109 2345, and the Fiscal Policy Office at 0 2273 9020. Approved individuals can pick up their welfare cards in mid-December and will be able to use them in January next year. Those denied can submit their applications again until the end of this month. Results will be announced in mid-December. Comptroller General's Department spokesperson Yanee Sangsrichun said between November 1st and 14th, more than 557,000 welfare cardholders purchased 145 million baht worth of commodities, accounting for a value-added tax of 9 million baht which will be reimbursed to the cardholders. -- nnt 2018-11-18
November 18, 20187 yr I have to wonder how they will be able to fund an expanding welfare system with very little tax income. not to mention getting people reliant on welfare is not a very good long term solution. America is a good example of that. Their poverty rates were on a downward trend for decades until the war on poverty started.
