The National Legislative Assembly is due to debate Friday on the amendments to the Narcotics Act to pave the way for the use of marijuana extracts for medical purpose, said Somchai Sawaengkarn, secretary of the parliamentary affairs extraordinary committee.

After the first reading, the NLA will set up a panel to scrutinize the bill before it is returned to the assembly for the second and third readings, he said, adding that the process would take about 60 days and the bill should be approved by January 23.

On Tuesday, Intellectual Property Department deputy director-general Direk Boonthae was invited to testify to the NLA “whips” about the applications for the patent of marijuana extracts by foreign companies with focus on the cancellation of the applications as marijuana is still regarded as illegal.

The applications will then be resubmitted.  Frivolous formalities seems to be this governments answer to every problem.

Let’s see who tries to send tea money this way to have them magically approved. Wouldn’t be smart on the thai part. They can ALL make their own crap ton of money if they stay away from big pharma mafia

This could be a real money maker for the government if they find a clever solution and not leave it up to private companies.

They finally hired experts to clear up the confusion:

International medical marijuana research allowed by progressive countries have already beat Thailand to the punch.  Thailand's medical marijuana pipe dream unfortunately will go up-in-smoke.

I agree. Most of the effective and potentially promising compounds have already been isolated. To really boost government coffers (and get a real jump on the rest of S.E. Asia), a relaxation of the recreational aspects of marijuana use should be phased in. Combined with a change in the laws of the use of vaporizers, Thailand could be leaders with the repeal of these antiquated laws. Holland didn't fall into the sea when they semi decriminalized with coffee shops nor did any other country that relaxed the laws, but it does allow  law enforcement  the ability to concentrate on more pressing issues. The profit and taxes could be funneled into health facilities/rehab centers to deal with their present health crisis with methamphetamine. But this would take foresight and guts, sadly lacking presently.
