Not the free hotel part but staying at Thai temples. In return for a small donation or doing some chores, they will spend a couple of nights at a temple before moving on. Did that years ago with the Mrs. The monks were very accommodating and even called ahead to the next temple to ask if they could accommodate us. Even if this guy had a million "followers" (sheep) there is no guarantee he tells the truth. Staying at the Temples is okay as long as he did donate and do some chores respectfully.
