A ranger stands amid a large strand of cannabis to be confiscated Oct. 8 in Phetchaburi province.

BANGKOK — The interim parliament unanimously approved Friday the first draft of a bill to legalize medical use of cannabis and kratom.

By a 145-to-0 vote, the assembly endorsed the draft, which would allow research, consumption, production, import and export of the controlled substances for medical purposes.

Thailand will not need to import, you have great growing conditions.

Nice, give the good fellas free bongs for their efforts. Pretty big bush that fella got there in the photo, good for a bout of nerve pain I anticipate having soon.

Not to distract from this positive and noted article, but the use of the term "Parliament" remains in question.

In theory, a standing body of government representatives are of an elected body, yes?

How many of the parliamentary jokers are designated and appointed by proxy? I dare to say an overwhelming percentile.

Going on half-a-decade......

Same as the ongoing and fanciful repetition of referring to Prayut as Prime Minister.

He's not that.

Yet, the language is subliminally accepted, nonetheless.

Great news. I hope it will be legal for recreational use as well, as it is a great alternative to alcohol which is is way worse for your health.

From the full article:

"Bill sponsor Somchai Sawangkan said agencies and personnel empowered under the draft law to handle cannabis and kratom include the Red Cross, dentists, veterinarians and Thai traditional medicine practitioners"

Strange that there is no mention of doctors, pharmacists and hospitals?

And will they only hand out extracts or actual weed?

It's pretty much grown inside the world over. There is no reason for any country to import it. The lower quality stuff grows outside. If you are growing commercially you would rather have exact humidity and light conditions every day.

I assume like other countries there will be a period they can't meet supply. This should last around 6 months to a year.

That is not completely correct.
Main reason to grow inside in many countries is the temperature and light intensity in winter.
Both points that Thailand has an advantage.
New varieties with C. ruderalis share are autoflowering regardless of the day length.

Growing inside makes it irrelevant. Anyway have you seen the weed they grow outside in Thailand? It is the worst pot imaginable given the climate they are so blessed to have. Sunlight is another problem you don't get the 12-18-12 hour light cycle.

Growing inside with controlled conditions is always going to produce better crops with a much higher THC level. The next step is teaching them how to get rid of the male plants.Holy mother of seeds batman!

Anyone understand their legislative process and how far out we are from final passage?

Oh yeah. Babes and bud. We're gonna rise up. We're gonna go higher!

And we all know one can buy most medication without prescriptions.  I am sure driving high on 'legal' medication will keep the country at the number 1 spot for highway fatalities and add another excuse to their arsenal - brake failure, sleeping, wet roads and now "I am on medication!"

You are completely wrong.

Outdoor sunlight is much better and produces much better quality buds, infact some varieties will not grow properly indoors at all.

The problem is the male plants pollinate the females, so seeds are produced. The other problem is the buds are harvested too early. Give the right conditions, the right seed and lack of male plants, outdoors is far more superior to indoors. The reason pot is grown indoors is because of the illegality of it.

Growing inside particularly if you are going to grow a product that is regulated produces more consistent results.

If you are looking for regulatory approval inside weed is all there is.

The problem is in Thailand they don't use new varieties and hybrids, only land races.
That's why the quality is absolutely crap.

And yes. They don't cull the male plants or use feminised seeds. I guess they've never heard of this practice.

One of the best outdoor strains come from the highlands of India, Pakistan and Morocco. So growing outdoor is not always bad.

I would say not worse than drivers under alcohol and methamphetamine.

Unanimous... Again.

Thus proving that the NLA is definitely not a lapdog of the junta. Nossir. Still, look on the bright side, nobody had to wake from their peaceful nap for longer than it takes to press the 'agree' button.

Job done.

Jeez. However did Thailand get itself into this state...?

They can't even grow a plant called "weed" well. There were shortages in Canada as well. For these reasons it is my contention it may take awhile to get it together.

At least until they can get a product that has universal consensus that over all it is consistent. That doesn't happen in the weather.

In this country legalizing LSD would be a good idea too. Could finally start understanding the world Thais live in, unicorns and rainbows and all.

My #1 worry would be pesticides, especially if smoked or vaporized.

Thailand already knows quite a lot about the commercial benefits of various illegal crops, weed will be just another one, and all the usual suspects will come-a-running. Banks, food conglomerates, brewers et al, they're all stocking up on brown paper bags as we speak.

So, the question on my mind: once a doctor gives me a medical certificate to treat my weltschmerz, can I grow my own — organically, under ideal conditions?

I am sure everyone in the government has big dollar signs flashing in front of their eyes. In Canada no one who is not connected to the government cannot get a permit to grow pot.

That was 3 negatives but I think you said you need connections even in Canada. Doesn't bode well for market forces to keep prices down in Thailand if that's the case.
