Talks to lift campaigning restrictions set for December 7

The government and the ruling junta will meet with political parties on December 7 to discuss lifting political restrictions and allow campaigning in the run-up to the next election, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Friday.

He said the event would be held at the Royal Thai Army Club on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.

Prayut, who also heads the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), said that clear regulations would be issued to lift the restrictions that have been in place since the 2014 coup.

“We will do it as soon as possible … The goal is to ensure safety for the country,” he said.

The prime minister said the tentative schedule of February 24 for the election remained unchanged.

When asked if any political parties urged the NCPO to help postpone the election, Prayut said: “I just saw this in newspapers. The NCPO has got no complaints. This is a matter for the Election Commission. I have no involvement in making a decision about this matter.”

He also declined to say whether he would join any political party or become its prime ministerial candidate in the run-up to the election.

On Thursday, a group of small political parties petitioned the EC for the election to be postponed until May 5, the latest allowed by the law on MP elections, which is to go into effect on December 11.

A rival petition was also filed by another group of small parties asking the EC to retain the tentative schedule of February 24.

The prime minister also said there was no need for a Cabinet reshuffle even if four government ministers joining the Palang Pracharat Party resign to focus on their party work.

“No more changes in the Cabinet line-up. According to the law, other Cabinet members can do the job of those who resign,” he said.

It will happen sooner or later, but let's wait for the smallprint. Stuff like 'Thou shalt not even come close to criticising the NCPO or its works' and 'No inappropriate or impolite language shall be used' with ridiculously harsh penalties for any transgressor(s).

In short, ensure that nobody quite knows where they stand so they say nothing, just like with the constitution scam...

Note the junta leader says that 'the goal is to ensure safety for the country'. After four years of oppression and no freedom of political speech, he does NOT say: 'Our goal is to return full freedom of speech and assembly to the Thai people. This is what they deserve, and we know they have waited a long time for it. But that is our goal and dedicated purpose: restored freedom to the Thai people - and that is what we shall give'.

NO. Quite the opposite. 'Safety' is his only concern - safety (untouchability and unaccountability) for the JUNTA and their mob.

All moot.

We already know the outcome.

....and get on with our lives.

Getting on with one's life and raising one's voice against tyranny are not mutually exclusive...

Keen observations only apply for those that reside and really associate daily here.

Most everyone I know are quite settled and connected.

It's the outsiders and wannabes whom make up s**t to be concerned with.

There are no need for talks. There is a need to audit these coup leaders and also immediately lift all bans. This guy thinks his the god father

He's more akin to an influential consigliere, advisor to the real Godfather and associates.

A lot of smoke and mirrors here. All of the decisions have been made. But...he public may just surprise everyone and vote their minds and hearts, cutting through the fog spewed by the current leaders. There has been a lot of effort put into manipulating this election but all that effort can still come apart.

250 chosen and junta appointed MP’s is cause for a revolt. There is zero democracy in this farce so called election

I trust that your call for mass rebellion isn't a bloody one.

Always easy for Farang to lead the charge, yet still remain an outsider.

Just talks. Said it before, campaigning by anyone other than present gov't will be allowed by the gov't only mere days before election day!

Foreigners are not Thai, but the Thai are fed up with all the BS. The election results for how manipulated might be the last straw on the top of the cherry on the peace cake.

...or not.

Again, Farang speculation and fakery.

Requires a true understanding and connection with Thais - which most have ever attained nor ever will.

Well then you are talking to one who has integrated with all sorts of Thai. Won't mention who and how, but it encompasses a lot of Thai people. All these people have opinions.

Well, of course they do. Most quite strong and lucid.

And has little relationship with a Euro-thought/opinion.
