BANGKOK — Twenty-two provinces were named in an updated list of areas where no new pubs, clubs or other entertainment venues can be opened, an official said Tuesday.

The ban, first enacted during a populist morality crusade waged by then-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was renewed in a Royal Decree published Thursday. Although existing bars and pubs are allowed to continue operating, new business licenses, theoretically, cannot be issued.

Very true. Running a GoGo years ago, in order to change the manager's name on the licence involved an additional cash payment of 10,000 Baht, no receipt of course.

That was in Thaksin's day. It wouldn't happen now...

Not for 10,000 baht anyway.

Whenever a politician or party pushed a morality campaign you know they are up to something. "Hey folks, look over here!"

Yeah, that's usually how it works.

Aside from the expected authoritarian rhetoric, I certainly wouldn't expect an enacted writ of this nature to be followed through or enforced. Such will be forgotten in due course - as many kin ordinances have been largely ignored or trashed over the years [under this righteous regime]....

Not much to be concerned with. All talk with a moral tone attached.

Local business is local business, regardless.

I've lost count of the number of bars and clubs in Thailand that were operating without a licence.  So, I can't see that not issuing a licence will make any difference at all.

Business as usual!
