Format Mp# Player...

I have an MP3 player I transfer radio mp3 files to so I can listen later. It works great except I seem to be having trouble deleting files later so I can put more (later dated) on.

I am using the Linux program GParted to check the memory in the player and there is no option for 'formatting' or wiping the memory.

I can do this in Windows, format the disc and that wipes it clean but to do this I have to shut down Ubyntu, fire up Windows, do the cleanup and then reboot Linux so I can copy the files down,

When I 'move to Trash' files on the player (Linux) they are still there although I can't see them I can still listen to them and they interfere with any new files I have added....

So how do I format a disc in Linux? That's what Linux sees my MP3 player as, same as a memory stick....

You shouldn't need to reformat to delete old files, if you delete them and empty the trash or press shift-delete to remove them without going to the trash the space should be freed.

Another way is to browse to your device, select View->Show Hidden Files and then open the now-visible .Trash directory and then remove them.

GParted has an option to reformat your player, I gave these instructions on the other thread, does it work correctly?

To reformat your mp3 player:

Use the selector button on the top right to choose /dev/sda1

There should be only one partition listed, and it should have details something like:

/dev/sda1 fat32 /media/MP3 XXXMiB XXXMiB XXXMiB lba

Check that the details are correct, including size, etc, this is to make sure you are targeting the right partition!

Then right-click it and choose unmount

Then right-click it and choose format to->fat32

Follow the instructions and apply the changes - this will format the drive

You should then be able to reinsert it or remount it and it will be empty and reformatted.

No, my copy of GParted does not offer me the option of 'Format'.

Only 'resize/move' or 'convert to'. I have tried converting to fat 32 from fat 16 and back again but that does nothing,

I found the trash folder on the MP3 and deleted all the old files, I will now see if they have all really gone!

I have found the MP3 does not automatically appear on the desktop when I connect, GParted can see it but to browse it I have to open a terminal and do a 'mount'. When I try to unmount from the desktop it says I cannot but I can unmount from the terminal OK.

Getting good at this, anyone need lessons?
