Harsher Penalties for "Drunk Driving and Repeat Offenders" Demanded
The yearly agenda: - no intercourse on Valentine's Day for teenagers - no booze on Buddhist days - no drunk people during Songkran - decent (i.e. conservative) dressing during Songkran (see the dressing code for nuns during Stone Age) - no drunk people on Loy Krathong - no drunk people on New Year's Eve - no drunk driving - no gambling - no prostitution - no tips (better known as bribes) If you throw the entire list out, fine a first time offender on the booze with a seriously juicy fine of 20,000 Baht or more (that's what they take in Pattaya from foreigners, if the latter wants to avoid a police report and subsequent court hearing). Repetition of the same = impound the vehicle and release it at 50,000 Baht after a month. Revenue for social welfare (flood victims in Chiang Rai etc. spring to mind). Legalize gambling = brings tax money into the state's coffers and keeps those sticky fingers from the corruption till. Legalize prostitution = will de-criminalize it and Somchai the Police Man goes empty without "beer money" or more "Tips" or corruption, name the culprit publicly with photos and personal details all over the media, ban them for life from any governmental job after they served six months with the compliments of the Department of Corrections. But after all these years I know, that the very same list will appear in each and every year to come - for the time being guaranteed! -

Would you expect positive comments about how wonderful we are when it is a story about a hit and run where the foreigner left her for dead? You must be woke. -

Foreign pickup driver flees after crashing into Thai woman in Phuket
He had probably had a few so drove off. Likely no license, no insurance. Foreigners are the worst on the roads, especially on motorbikes, half of them ride around with their indicators on while not turning, the other half looking at their phones for directions. I hope the scars to the girls face heal and she recovers financially. -

Phuket Named World’s Most Overcrowded Destination Amid Tourism Boom
All I can say is I told you so. And yes Thailand did it to itself, and they merit the scorn. Despite all the claims of going upscale and pursuing quality visitors, the opposite happened. The focus was on attracting cheap junket flights and it hasn't delivered the type of visitor that builds sustainable tourism. I know it's going to be a nightmare this high season. -

Digital wallet to the rescue: PM bets on cashing in for Thailand’s economy
Don't understand you, mate. I never get charged double at markets or anywhere else, and it's been 12 years here. My missus doesn't like people who rip off my/her money.. Thais don't seem to look down on me either.. Treat them with respect and humour and see what happens.. Mind you, I am in Issarn.. Friendlier people up this way, maybe. -

New OA Visa Financial Requirements?
Nothing new here as all embassies apply a poor exchange rate. Simple example is a tourist visa is supposed to cost 1000 baht but it costs $40 and non-imm O is officially 2000 baht but costs $80. This means they use an exchange rate of 25 (instead of around 35) Another example using 25 exchange is new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) advertised at 10,000 baht, but cost $400 in US (about 14,000 baht)
