Why would anyone want to blow up a mermaid statue, maybe they thought if they blew it to bit's it would reveal the lotto numbers?

Or an act of Muslim insurgency or believers - though I'm surprised it lasted without damage since its creation in 1966?

Sculpted by Jitr Buabus based on a character from Phra Aphai Mani, a popular book in Thai literature by Sunthon Phu. http://www.thai-blogs.com/2009/02/21/mermaid-in-songkhla/

In a predominant Muslim province, no doubt this semi-nude woman statue is against Islamic beliefs and culture. In "ordinary times" (before the annexation of the Muslims southern territories by the Kingdom of Thailand), this statue would never have been allowed on a southern province beach.

Maybe, maybe not, but fact is, that only parts of Songkhla province are predominant Muslim and that Muang Songkhla never had been part of the Sultanate of Patani - the insurgency claims only the districts of Chana, Thepa, Na Thawi and Saba Yoi.

If you wanted to put BP Samila hotel out of business...

My money is on a business dispute.  But I don't have a dog in that fight.  And of course, different narratives serve different entities.
