.Police must be educated by their ambitious top brass to learn how to greet any expat/tourist comming over to them and filing a complaint against a taxi.

Last year the taxi;s refused to use their meter near kao sarn road so i asked a sitting policeman if he could speak english to report it to him...but he couldn't speak a word english.

There's a simple answer, which I have used myself. After you note the meter is off, wait until you arrive then state you will pay what the meter reads. Nothing? I agreed to not use the meter? Where did I sign saying so? Oh, OK, thanks very much. Bye.

At which point 'brave, brave Sir Robin' is confronted with the long sword that Somchai the cabby keeps in the trunk just for such special situations.

Grab in Thailand uses regular licenced taxis, unlike Malaysia and Vietnam, hence you get roughly the same price as you do getting a cab on the street. Or it can be more. I checked the price from Karon to Jungceylon the other day: 550 baht! The rip-off taxis and tuktuks charge 400 baht. I've just checked the price from Karon to the Airport and it's 1200 baht!

Is Phuket unique in being the only place where you can get a regular rip-off priced taxi cheaper than you can get a Grab?

Leave it to Thailand to screw up Grab. Works well elsewhere, here it’s plauged with bad drivers and rates that are often higher than conventional taxis.

It was 100b more than a taxi in Krabi from the airport, and is usually 50b more from Chiang Mai airport, sometimes 100b.

Never had a problem with Uber. Not one. Grab us a constant hassle in Chiang Mai with incompetent and rude drivers.

There was a time in Thailand when the Tourist Police, supposedly, had at least the pretense of being here trying to assist and protect tourists and other foreigners in Thailand.

Last year, under BJ, it certainly at least appeared that the entire mission of the Tourist Police was turned upsidedown and redirected to instead focus on arresting and deporting supposed foreigner immigration violators, who mostly seemed to be low level workers from neighboring SE Asia countries, but occasionally ended up being assorted farangs.

Too bad they couldn't manage to put as much effort into fighting the renegade elements of Thailand's domestic taxi and van operations where Thais and foreigners alike are ripped off and otherwise endangered, as they did into going after low level workers who probably were often brought here and/or employed here by various Thai entities, and most of the time probably not bothering anyone and breaking any law other than immigration status.

My experience with Uber taxis in BKK was great. nearly flawless.

My experience with Grab taxis in BKK has been miserable, not just because their rates often are higher than regular meter taxi rates, but also with all kinds of service/driver problems that I never had with Uber.

Grab bought Uber Thailand operations, thus no more uber for us. Oh and a sidenote, uber collected 40-80baht surcharge picking up or going to airport, as does grab now as well. (this in chiang mai at least on both accounts).

No shame in running away.

It's usually a gamble with these people, if you stay around to help them get the sword out then more fool you. Me? I'll try to remember when I was a decent sprinter.

Besides, people like cabbies are good at watching body language, that battle is fought and won before anyone gets out of the cab.

The only time I remember a cabbie got out of the cab is after he delivered the 'too far, traffic bad line near Siam Square, after which I got out of the cab and walked away leaving the rear door swinging in the breeze (and the traffic).

He wasn't happy and I didn't care much if he was happy or not. No sword though, perhaps I'm used to a better class of cabbie...

I always make sure the meter is turned on, quite simple really.
